I want to live in this piece and let the mood drive my thoughts and emotions till then end of time.

I started working on tape project for a local label (Unit Structure Sound Recordings) today. I recently went on a mini-tour with some friends from the label, and the first show we played was in Vancouver. The ride was something like 12 hours, so gruelling. The trip from Vancouver and back is the inspiration for this tape, mainly the theme of loops and repetition that I discovered in many aspects of our journey.

Asma Maroof, Patrick Belaga and Tapiwa Svosve share 'The Stranger', the first single from the upcoming full-length album 'The Sport of Love' out via PAN on May 26th.

On The Sport of Love, seasoned collaborators Asma Maroof, Patrick Belaga and Tapiwa Svosve consider the language, competition and contradiction of modern romance: its yearning, incomprehensible vastness and the inevitable darkness and fleeting fragility. For the trio, love is the emotion that propels all of us whether we acknowledge it or not, and its expression can be realized in many forms.

Everything comes into sharp focus on the album's lengthy central piece 'The Stranger', that brings in additional instrumentation from harpist Ayha Simone and percussionist Mathieu Edward. The three friends saw this particular composition as a journey within itself, charting the anxiety, harmony and uncertainty of love. Shifting from gooey freeform jazz into gurgling noise and bleak ambient drone, it connects the dots between Dorothy Ashby, Arve Henriksen, Jon Hassell and Hildur Guðnadóttir while voyaging into parts unknown. It's a finale of sorts that wrestles with the complexity of the album's themes, returning to earlier refrains and prolonging their tension.

The work is done. Nearly nine years in the making. Evolved through countless iterations. Forged and reforged session by session, season after season. Several lifetimes worth of happenings happened. Finally complete.

Utu Lautturi's upcoming album is a six-piece collection of unique sound collages. Based on improvised acoustic instrumentation, percussive rituals, collaborative ideas, intimate field recordings and organic sound design, Syvin ydin guides the listener to journey, frolic, rest and meditate on an emotionally rich and sonically flourishing landscape. Compared to Utu's previous work, most pieces on the album are of a warmer and brighter hue. Each track is created with intent, each sound has a story. I wonder what you will hear in them...
