Sparkle in your Heart: The Very Best of Tatsuro Yamashita

The rain pours from under the velvet black sky as silvery clouds glow with thunder high above the towering skyscrapers standing electric in the endless night. The cab slows to a stop infront of an empty looking building that appears forgotton in time; maybe once a busy nightclub now just a remnant of some other time. 

You leave a tip in the driver's hand as he gives you an indifferent look through the rear-view mirror as if he's taken you here hundreds of times before. Running out in the storm your footsteps make gentle splashes as you pass the doors that open as if by magic. You are ushered in by a man wearing a long black tuxedo, black gloves, and sunglasses for some reason---you don't stop to think why. The hostess, a tall beautiful woman with a misty gaze and tired eyes greets you with only a reassuring nod and a familiar metallic scent of incense and artificial citrus. She knows you from somewhere possibly, maybe some past life, maybe from thousands of them but only vague silohuettes of the memories remain.

 She walks you through a long corridor mostly draped in a river of long black curtains that leads into a vast gloomy looking ballroom with high ceilings, antiqued chairs, and gold lined tables of roccoco design worn from ages of holding up glasses of wine and spirits. You settle yourself in a booth in the corner, obscured by large ornate columns. You take notice that the huge space is only slightly occupied with lonely patrons all hidden in the shadows. You hide underneath your large brimmed hat as the waitress signals to you. "The usual" you whisper under your breathe as she shuffles through the winding path of unoccupied seats to get your drink at the grand bar where a single bartender shines a glass seemingly forever. 

The stage animates with brilliant beams of light that pierce through the dense cloud of smoke and isolation. You sit back and wonder to yourself why you are even here, maybe as if some cosmic circumstance you think that maybe you never actually left. It could be that you're just a ghost here, just like everyone else.
