Arie Dixon is serving up more on his ‘Jacked’ album. Who was ‘got’ this week? England’s own Kooks were the victims. Their song, ‘Sweet Emotion,’ was the funky groove held up at gun point and taken to better horizons. The original song is a good one; it might be about as funky as four white boys from East Sussex, England can get. Arie’s take is funkier; melding sounds like Michael Jackson and CeeLo Green with straight ahead hip-hop like the Roots. Somehow Arie’s version sounds more organic, which seems counterintuitive because it was a remix of a song that was not his to begin with. I am reminded of Eddie Hazel’s version of the Beatles, ‘I Want You(She’s so Heavy).’ No one will deny the merits of the original; I mean it is the Beatles for god’s sake. But Eddie Hazel, with Bootsie Collins in-tow, took it to much funkier heights. It’s as if they sanded down the edges and coated it with something viscous—in similar fashion, Arie has taken something good and altered it slightly. And though his version of ‘Sweet Emotion’ is more complex, it seems far easier to digest.
