Back in December, 2018, we had the pleasure of hosting a special live set from Australian producer Nali at a party at OHM, Berlin. Nic is not only a supremely talented producer, but also a close friend of our collective, and someone who has been a part of our journey from the very start. His performance was a true highlight of the night and its careful pacing, delicate melodies and understated power have stayed clear in our memories ever since. 

Indeed, over time this live set has grown to become an important reference point for us, as it naturally formed the basis of our first EP release with Nic. Together, we have dived into these memorable 90 minutes time and time again, drawing direct inspiration for the tracks on the release from the music and ideas presented within. 

As we prepare to release our first record - Nali's Chance Encounters EP - we’re happy to share a recording of the live set that brought this release into being. We hope you can feel (or relive) the energy and electricity that inspired us to embark on this journey together.

Según la filosofía clásica es el modo de existencia de un ser que tiene en sí mismo el principio de su acción y su fin; el alma es la entelequia del cuerpo decía Aristóteles. El músico que ocupa este programa se adhiere como una lapa a cualquiera de estas dos acepciones.

Recorremos la carrera musical de este misterioso artista, creador de una manera de llegar, de salir y de entrar en tu oído; adalid de la emotividad y del sentimiento por encima de cualquier otro sentido capaz de ser despertado por el arte; Es música que conmueve. Sus míticos y sentidos pads, sus mil tipos de lineas de batería, sus samples de voz en forma de jack to the patata y sus eternas melodías son las protagonistas de este programa en el que de paso, al ser narrado por humanos sentidores, se le adjetiva hasta agotar el diccionario de sinónimos. 

Para ello contamos como director musical de este electromagnética con uno de los feligreses de su Iglesia, nos montamos en el reloj, y en orden cronológico repasamos los hitos de cada uno de sus akas, que son muchos, y que tienen tantos matices de secuenciador como de conductas y vicisitudes humanas. Al fin y al cabo, la música es la entelequia de quien la escucha y la hace, existe y no existe a la vez, se la puede dar forma de vinilo o de pendrive, pero no tiene ni necesita forma orgánica, como el alma que decía Aristóteles.

We are blessed to welcome our first artist to our new Podcast series. We say welcome dear XDB and thanks for contributing this beautiful vinyl only mix!

XDB is Kosta Athanassiadis – German by birth and in residence, with Greek parentage. His roots are in the central German town of Göttingen. It was here that he began DJing in the early nineties; where he worked in a record shop; where he ran a radio show for five years; and the base from which he established the Metrolux record label in 2006. 

For many people, it was at this point that XDB appeared on their radar.  He has no shortage of technical skill but it’s his selection that truly shines – putting the music itself at the forefront, letting songs breathe when need be, and delivering plenty of head-scratching ‘what the hell is this track?’ moments. It’s on this that Kosta has built his reputation. 

When it comes to producing, Kosta favours a slow and steady work rate, opting to focus on quality control rather than record shop ubiquity. His DJing keeps him in the public eye, but one gets the sense that XDB prefers to operate in the shadows. There’s a refreshing lack of gimmickry to his approach – keeping it low-key allows him to be judged solely on the basis of talent. Arguably, it’s an innate quality – the way he wants to play it; the way that brings him most satisfaction, but it’s helped establish his reputation as an artist of considerable merit, winning the approval his audience and peers, alike.

#114 brings the talented Italian duo, Primal Code (@primalcodemusic), to the animix series, an act who have become known for their distinctively soulful & hypnotic interpretation of atmospheric techno.

Their recent release on @kalaharioystercult was one of my favourites of last year, a unique & modern fuse of dub techno, acid & modular sounds, resulting in a magically squelchy, deep, subterranean body of work. Before that, releases on the prolific @hypnus & @konstrukt cemented their style. This mix is a lovely continuation of that.

Communities possess undeniable power to foster a sense of camaraderie and mutual support, and furthermore, this power can be harnessed to affect change on a broader scale. In the realm of music, it would be a miss not to acknowledge the robust and innovative music scene in Kyiv. Ukrainian artist Vera Logdanidi is one of the driving forces behind the local community, as a member of the Rhythm Buro collective, which organizes an unconventional festival and warehouse parties with a devoted following. Additionally, Vera oversees Kashtan, a communal channel and label. As a DJ, Vera's distinctive style is rooted in a diverse range of influences, as you can listen in our podcast. We had the opportunity to speak with Vera about her latest track release on Onboard Records, the Ukrainian community, and the art of DJing.
