We have been working on this project with Mira for a while. Following Mira’s Curated Playlist contribution we discussed different ways in which music can enrich “the meme experience.” She kindly created this sound piece that is meant to be listened to while looking at memes on your phone.

Mira:
Classical music lovers will acknowledge that all releases of a piece of music vary and are open to interpretation. Pop music lovers are used to cover versions… Monteverdi has done something unusual for the baroque song I rearranged for this project. Commenting on the soprano part in the introduction to the Lamento, he left a note saying the singer should sing “according to her emotions” while the other singers and musicians are to follow the directions of the written score. He inbuilt variation and virality into the piece.
If you open Youtube and search for “Lamento della Ninfa” you will come across thousands of videos by amateurs and professionals alike. Thousands of variations and mutations sing out, some slow, some fast, some delicate, some wild. Despite the age of the piece, it’s still very much alive and viral… with a continuous stream of new releases and uploads… they keep mutating and imitating. And so it is from this particular ancient element of culture, passed by non-generic means that I have shaped a sound collage… cutting and pasting, and fusing, and moving through all these hundreds of variations to create perhaps the most dramatic soundtrack for your meme scrolling…

The Dying Miss Saeki (Den döende fröken Saeki) is the fourth and last movement in From the Bottom of a Well (Från botten av en brunn) based on Haruki Murakami's novel Kafka on the Shore. The the sounds were designed from, and the music was written from a grounded theory analysis of the book. The piece was performed and recorded on the 16th of December 2021 by Robert Ek, clarinet; Kevin Kirs Verstege, cello; and Rikard Vilhelm Lindell, eurorack at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. Den döende fröken Saeki / The Dying Miss Saeki

Any of the tubes forming part of the blood circulation system of the body, carrying in most cases oxygen-depleted blood towards the heart.

A fracture in rock containing a deposit of minerals or ore and typically having an extensive course underground.

It comes in a few different forms. The most common is a fine, white powder. It can also be made into a solid rock crystal.

Most users snort the white powder into their nose. Some rub it onto their gums or dissolve it in water and inject it with a needle. Others heat up the rock crystal and breathe the smoke into their lungs.
