Adam Zagajewski was born in Lvov in 1945, a largely Polish city that became a part of the Soviet Ukraine shortly after his birth. A major figure of the Polish New Wave literary movement of the early 1970s and of the anti-Communist Solidarity movement of the 1980s, Zagajewski is today one of the most well-known and highly regarded contemporary Polish poets in Europe and the United States. Zagajewski's most recent books in English are Eternal Enemies (Farrar, Straus, & Giroux, 2008) and Without End: New and Selected Poems (2002), which was nominated for a National Book Critics Circle Award. He is also the author of a book of essays and literary sketches, Two Cities: On Exile, History and the Imagination (1995), and Solidarity, Solitude: Essays. When, after September 11, The New Yorker published his poem, "Try to Praise the Mutilated World," on its back page—a rare departure from the cartoons and parodies that usually occupy that space—it resonated with many readers. He now spends part of the year in Krakow, the city he lived in during the 1960s and '70s; and he teaches in Chicago.

Jody Gladding's Rooms and Their Airs was published by Milkweed Editions (2009).  Her collection Stone Crop appeared in the Yale Younger Poets Series, and recent poems have appeared in Poetry, ecopoetics, and Orion, among other journals.  She also translates French and has produced some 20 translations for Archipelago Books, Columbia Univ. Press, Princeton Univ. Press, and other publishers.  Gladding has taught at Cornell Univ., was Resident Poet at the Frost Place, has received a Whiting Writers Award, and was a Stegner Fellow at Stanford.  She lives in East Calais, Vermont.

Nicholas Delbanco is the author of twenty-three novels, collections of short stories, and non-fiction works. Delbanco's work has received numerous awards and honors including an NEA Creative Writing Fellowship and a Guggenheim Fellowship. He was a professor in the department of language and literature at Bennington College from 1966-85 and is currently the Robert Frost Distinguished University Professor of English Language and Literature at the University of Michigan and Chair of the Hopwood Committee. His most recent non-fiction book, Lastingness: The Art of Old Age was published by Grand Central Publishing in 2011.

Waldman has written more than 40 books, including the legendary Fast Speaking Woman, the innovative Marriage: A Sentence; and the meditative Structure of the World Compared to a Bubble. Her most recent is Manatee Humanity (2009), a hybrid-poem that explores the nuances of inter-species communication and compassion. It draws on animal lore and encounters, dreams, evolutionary biology, neuroscience, and Buddhist ritual. Outrider, a collection of poems, essays, and interviews, is a look at what poetry and the role of the poet can be. Waldman is cofounder, with Allen Ginsberg, of the celebrated Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University. Recipient of many awards, she is the Artistic Director for Naropa’s Summer Writing Program, and teaches in New England College’s MFA program.

Nandi Comer is the author of American Family: A Syndrome  (Finishing Line Press) and Tapping Out (Triquarterly), which was awarded the 2020 Society of Midland Authors Award and the 2020 Julie Suk Award. She is a Cave Canem Fellow, a Callaloo Fellow, and a 2019 Kresge Arts in Detroit Fellow. She is the Michigan Poet Laureate.

Alice Notley is the author of more than twenty books of poetry including The Descent of Alette and Mysteries of Small Houses. She was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and winner of the L.A. Times Book Award for Poetry. In 2001, she received an award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the Poetry Society of America's Shelly Memorial Award. Born in Arizona, Notley grew up in California. She was an important force in the eclectic second generation of the New York school of poetry.

Jean Valentine won the Yale Younger Poets Award for her first book, Dream Barker, in 1965. Her eleventh book of poetry is Break the Glass (Copper Canyon Press, 2010). Door in the Mountain: New and Collected Poems 1965-2003 was the winner of the 2004 National Book Award for Poetry. The recipient of the 2009 Wallace Stevens Award from the Academy of American Poets, Valentine has taught at Sarah Lawrence, New York University, and Columbia. A. H. Jerriod Avant was the Callaloo Fellow in residency at Vermont Studio Center in June 2015. This recording blends two readings he did during his stay at VSC: the first, in the Mason House library, serves as a quiet introduction or segue into his second public reading in the Lecture Hall. 

Jerriod was born in Longtown, MS. A graduate of Jackson State University, he has earned M.FA. degrees from Spalding University and New York University, where he was a Writers in the Public Schools Fellow. An alumnus of the Callaloo Creative Writing Workshop at Brown University, his poems have appeared in the Mississippi Review, Boston Review, Pinwheel, Louisville Review, The Rumpus, and other journals. Jerriod is the recipient of two Pushcart nominations, finalist for the 2015 Mississippi Review Prize, recipient of the Joseph F. McCrindle Online Editorial Fellowship at Poets & Writers, a Vermont Studio Center residency and a 2015 -2016 Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center Fellowship.
