This is a recording of the ocean (Discovery Bay, Victoria) from under a rock , so it's very muted & has lots of bass. I love the way these environment recordings sound like a musique concrete piece or a synthesised soundscape. I did a little EQ & limited the peaks a bit, but apart from that it's a raw location recording.

Ocean Under A Rock - Discovery Bay

This is the sound of the surf at Lorne, on the south Victorian Coast, recorded amongst where the sea was coming in. It's a little short, since the sea took me by surprise a few times, so I've edited out the yelling & squealing. The only other treatment I used was some deep low end filters to remove the wind pop & potential harmful frequencies. The bass of the sea is around 60Hz on this recording, whereas my previous post (from Discovery Bay) has a lot of lower subs.

When I was living south of the river last year, this uncompromising brick wall is something I used to drive past whenever I was heading into the markets or the city. For whatever reason I found its austerity to be amusing; the unadorned facade, with no windows, doors, and (up until recently) not even any graffiti seemed surreal and in some ways signifying of the unglamorous landscape of this suburb. Perhaps its the influence of my friend Drew Woolley, whose own compositional work at the time included postcard pieces dedicated to the mundane urban clutter of Perth’s eastern suburbs, that made this weird southern monument stand out to me so much. Since noticing the wall I’ve been lucky enough to visit the Hamburger Bahnhof exhibition of Joseph Beuys in Berlin and walk through the 20 tons of tallow fat that constitute ‘Unschlitt’, a series of sculptures cast from the useless corner of a pedestrian underpass - ‘a testament to empty space slowly being wasted', as Alena Sokhan describes it. My homage to the wall is my way of trying to look at a similar idea, passing through a more personal veil of memories of people and place that I associate with the area now.

Hindustani Classical Music - Adrian McNeil (Sarod) & Aneesh Pradhan (Tabla)

Adrian McNeil is an ARIA nominated virtuoso player of the Hindustani string instrument the sarod. His training followed the traditional guru shishya training methods under Pandit Ashok Roy, Professor Sachindranath Roy and Dr Ashok Ranade. Adrian has performed on Indian national television and radio in major venues across India, Australia and elsewhere around the world.

Aneesh Pradhan is one of India's leading tabla players. He is a disciple of the legendary musician Pandit Nikhil Ghosh from whom he inherited a large repertoire of traditional and rare material. Aneesh has accompanied the leading musicians in India, performs extensively internationally and has made many recordings of his solo improvisations and his own compositions. His solo performances on tabla are legendary and he has been honoured with many prestigious awards for his incredible artistry in India and elsewhere.

"imprisoned ghosts in a murdered land'. Electroacoustic piece 1984. The recent events in Chile brought to mind a piece I made in 1984. My wife is Chilean and in 1984 we visited Chile. This was 11 years after the coup and they still had a curfew at 8pm and people disappearing. It is a brutalist piece made even more brutalist by the technology I used at the time including early digital synthesisers and street and radio recordings made on a minicassette dictating machine. In retrospect this really gives an audio impression of living under fascist oppression. I also made variations on the Popular Unity Chilean song 'The people united will never be defeated'. The composer Rzewski made variations on it about the same time but I did not discover his version til years later.

the game started
images by imagining
scattered at random
the mists were clouded
that is visions and eyes deceptions
fast comes like a lynx
Reality from Mental world appear!

bringing a scream into my mind

keep your dreams alive!
