Spiritual Touch

Jamaican saxophonist & arranger Cedric Im Brooks is one of my most cherished reggae artist. Actually, confining him to the reggae scene would be a massive understatement. 
A brilliant musician, he kept on blurring the lines between spiritual Free-jazz (think Sun Ra), Afro grooves (think Fela), Latin rhythms and, of course, Reggae. 
A cornerstone of legendary label Studio One, his musical legacy is impressive and if you're not familiar with him, I urge you to dig into his most famous albums, mostly recorded in the 70's with his band The Light Of Saba ("United Africa", "Im Flash Forward" or "The Magical Light Of Saba") & get ready for some colourful funky journey.

"Africa" is one of my favorite track by him, an afro-funk jam whose joyful & infectious horns chorus is hard to resist. With a clear hint at the "back to Motherland" Rasta myth, "Africa" is also a great example of Cedric's spiritual Rastafari faith, often present in his songs lyrics.
Here is my DJ-friendly nudisco-flavored edit of it.

Cedric Im Brooks - Africa (V4YS Motherland Edit)

"To celebrate summer and at same time my first EP release, I decided to give away a "secret weapon"  private edit of mine. The original track is from a French singer, Veronique Sanson, pretty famous in France in the 80s / 90s for her pop song. But in the late 70's, from a collaboration with producer Bernard Saint Paul, she came out with this fantastic slow disco funk track that very few people know about (I think). Myself, I have heard the original track by chance 1 or 2 years ago, fell in love with it and knew right away I wanted to do a serious re-work of it. Besides new arrangement, and new drums, I re-build a totally new 2 minutes intro for it to shine when Veronique's voice comes in. Special mixing trick and mastering by my friend Benjamin L'hotelier. Here we go."

Kampana's debut release was a global hit across the house, disco and tropical scene, with support from heavyweights such as Francois K, Soul Clap and Gilles Peterson.

The label is back just in time for summer with three more doses of peak time fire from Aroop Roy, who has gained a fine reputation for the quality and widespread appeal of his releases.

‘You Say' is a funk-fuelled number with gritty retro vocals and guitar, driven by a warm disco groove and 80s arp-synth. The feel-good vibes gradually build into an anthemic floor-filling climax.

‘Taj Mahal' reworks a Brazilian classic into a full on house workout, reminiscent of Roy's popular series on Gamm.

‘Mapora' is an original number that will blend well into both deep house and afro-centric sets. The track builds nicely with filtered samples and syncopated vocals, coming in with an infectious highlife guitar line and late night synth stabs, to get mind and body moving.
