Eu Vou Torcer is a Jorge Ben song from his 1974 album A Tábua De Esmeralda. A spiritual anthem about peace, joy and unity. Some universal poetic words meeting his irresistible groovy samba style.  Here’s remix of the track, where I added a warm contemporary synths/electro orchestration, drums and percussions. A track I’d love playing  on a chill summer sunset DJ set, hope you will too!

Released in 1983 as part of the "Dádiva" album, "Rio Babilônia" is not as famous as the "Taj Mahal / Filho Maravilha / Pais Tropical" song, which was the highlight of this LP. 
It is nevertheless a joyful love message written byJorge Ben to his incredible hometown. Here is my drummed up edit of it.

Jorge Ben - Rio Babilônia (V4YS Flamengo Edit)

Released in 1975 as part of JorgeBen & GilbertoGil duo album "Jorge & Gil", this song evokes the legendary Carnaval bloco from Salvador de Bahia, the "Filhos De Gandhy", whose history is a great snapshot of Brazil social and cultural roots.

In 1951, following authoritarian Brazilian authorities challenge of some important social welfare benefiting Bahia's port workers, a group of the city's dockers led the opposition, chosing Mahatma Gandhi's famous non-violent approach. 
Unfolding during carnival time, their demonstrations were met with a large popular success, so much that they decided to cement their group through a cultural and spiritual association: a carnival bloco. The "Filhos De Gandhy" (with an "y", I don't know why), were born.  

Today it's one of the oldest and largest blocos in the country with more than 10 000 members. Their white outfit and turban is easily recognizable, and the legend says it gives men wearing it a certain sex-appeal with women :) 
Bahia's strong African legacy is also very much present in the Filhos's songs and chants, often written in Nigerian Yoruba language, while also influenced by African animist religion Candoblé (also know as Afoxé).

Born in Salvador and occasionally partying with the group, Gilberto Gil wrote this 13 minutes-long song, probably as a direct tribute to the Filhos. Here is my drummed-up (and shortened) Dj-friendly edit of it.

P.S.: the photo artwork dates back from 1946/48. It was taken in Bahia by late French photographer and enthnologist Pierre Verger, who dedicated his life studying the links between West Africa and Brasil, notably the Candomblé religion. His work as a photographer is simply stunning, I urge you to google it if you enjoy photo as an art, and Brasil & its people in particular.

Gil&Jorge - FilhosDoMahatma (V4YS Adoxé Edit)

Written by Jacques Higelin & Brigitte Fontaine, "La Grippe" was recorded in 1965. It was produced by legendary 40's/50's/60's talent scout Jacques Canetti, as part of a longer collection of songs, "12 chansons d'avant le déluge", which I highly recommend.

Founder of "Les 3 Baudets" club in Paris in the late 40s, Canetti auditionned Jacques Higelin for the first time in 1955. Only 15-year-old at the time,  young Higelin impressed him, but was too young for Canetti to promote...yet. 
Canetti told Higelin' parents that day that Jacques will probably hear from him again...when he turns 25. And kept his word, by producing this first record in Higelin long career!

To me, this wonderful little song sounds like an early echo of the bossa/jazz wave that hit in France in the late 60's/early 70's. Higelin actually subsequently worked a lot with the Saravah Records label, created by the man who introduced Brazilian sounds in France, Pierre Barough. 

Here is my samba/bossa Dj-friendly revisit of this song, as a humble tribute to Higelin's talent and legacy.

To be officially released in February 2022, as part of Tudo Azul EP on TSTD, my revisit of this 1972 track from Gilberto (actually a cover of a track written by Gordurinha & Jackson do Pandeiro), where lyrics are a funny critic of the supposedly the one-way cultural relationship between the US and Brazil in the 60s/70s.

Confusão (Tudo Azul EP - TSTD08)

Written in 1969 in Roma by Chico Buarque and Toquinho, “Samba de Orly,” is a beautiful exile song. A melancholic message addressed by a Brazilian forced to flee to Europe, to a friend lucky enough to go back home to Rio. 
It's in fact an auto-biographic story in a heavy political context: in early 1969, under aggressive scrutiny by an increasingly repressive Brazilian dictatorship, Chico Buarque took advantage of a concert tour in Italy with Toquinho to effectively exile himself there temporarily with his wife. 
When Toquinho and Chico reviewed the final version of the song, their friend Vinicius De Moraes advised them to make the lyrics harsher and more clearly political to reflect the pain of life in exile. But Brazilian censorship refused the changes, and the song was released in Brazil with their original milder lyrics. Song title refers to Paris's Orly, as it was well known to the Brazilian audience, contrary to Roma's Fiumicino airport.

Fast forward to today, and I can't help thinking about Brazil current situation and regime, which evokes in several ways this dark dictatorship era. Let's hope all the wonderful artists in the country will not be forced to exile themselves as well. Here's my groovy take of the song, as a little hint of love and support to all of them :)
