8ball - Don't Stop The Yacht... Rock

When the Growing Bin first bloomed from blog and record store to label it was originally intended to be a reissue imprint. If you’ve kept your ear to the ground and head in the Bin, you’ll know that isn’t exactly how it went down. But for this release we are going back to the scheme a young Basso dreamed up in his adolescent years: bring back the rare, unknown and unfindable.
So here is Mainpoint‘s ‘Alaska Wartet’ - a stunning private pressed 7” entirely unknown to the wider world. Its original 1980 press was less than extensive, and the few copies which did appear were sold exclusively at concerts and local record shops – kudos to all twenty  ve people who got a copy! Mainpoint started out as a Jazz-Rock out t in 1978 but as the years rolled on, these guys fell for the funk. Finding a 4/4 in a world of syncopation, Mainpoint fell foul of their elbow-patched pals, being labelled Tanz-Jazz since their audiences actually danced (in contrast to the serious silence of their contemporaries’ concerts).
‘Alaska Wartet’ made it from Side 2 on the 1980 press to Side 1. This incredibly tight Boogie jam bounds out the speakers with a synth line from heaven and fusion moves galore –
it’s sure to put a smile on dancer‘s faces worldwide.
‘Frisbee’  ies o  the  ipside, inviting dancers to forget about gravity and go for broke. Soaring skywards from this o , this uplifting masterpiece is perfectly topped by that screwdriver hook sung by Ika Hussmann!
Time for some Tanz-Jazz, folks!

I’ve been waiting to write a full blog post before I put up this mix from what is going to be my last festival appearance for some time, but its been difficult, given the circumstances we all find ourselves in, to fully engage, and although I’ve made a start there’s still more I’d like to say, so the post will have to wait a bit longer.

Its Easter weekend, so I think its about time I shared the mix – it was recorded on March 8th at the WOMADelaide festival, the centrepiece of my recent Australian tour, and was pretty much a perfect gig for me – environment, crowd, sound/set-up – featuring a jamboree of some old favourites alongside more recent releases / re-edits. There’s a strong Aussie representation, with tracks by Tame Impala, Confidence Man and Owl Eyes - a great new remix of ‘You And I’ by Late Nite Tuff Guy who also provides, along with Dr Packer, a number of reworks.

This was only a month ago, but how times have changed. Hope you’re keeping safe and coping during lockdown.

Janax Pacha and I have come together with our creative artistic abilities to create this unique and powerfully vibrational experience. Combining the organic and shamanic Live Looping style of Janax Pacha with a refined sonic aesthetic, we are exploring new dimensions of possibilities live sets. This set is completely live and improvised in the moment, feeding off the energy of our surrounding and audience... it is a completely new experience every time.

We performed this set recently together at the beautiful Tree House Tulum, where the jungle meets the ocean under the moon and stars. This music is a pure reflection of our essence as humans and artists, both individually and together. We are mirrors of each other and of you.
