Sould Out - Gelagat Anak Muda [Free Download]

Fela Kuti is one of my all-time favorite artist, both for his immense musical legacy, but also for his humanist political message. 

Here is a rework I dared to make of one of his last song, O.D.O.O. (overtake don't overtake overtake), released in 1989.

As much as I love the intense groove emanating from this almost 32mn-long track, I also find it particularly interesting as it's a kind of condensed summary of Fela's decades-long political fight. 

In this song he references in a kind of endless mashup some of his most famous tracks like "Zombie", "Shuffering and Shmiling", "Kalakuta Show" or "Unknown Soldier", to once again denounce the fake post-war emancipations of many African countries from colonies to military-led regimes pretending to be democracies.  

Hope you'll enjoy this condensed housy take, but whether you do or not, I guarantee you should take 32 minutes of your time to dig into the timeless original if you're not familiar with It already.

Jamaican saxophonist & arranger Cedric Im Brooks is one of my most cherished reggae artist. Actually, confining him to the reggae scene would be a massive understatement. 
A brilliant musician, he kept on blurring the lines between spiritual Free-jazz (think Sun Ra), Afro grooves (think Fela), Latin rhythms and, of course, Reggae. 
A cornerstone of legendary label Studio One, his musical legacy is impressive and if you're not familiar with him, I urge you to dig into his most famous albums, mostly recorded in the 70's with his band The Light Of Saba ("United Africa", "Im Flash Forward" or "The Magical Light Of Saba") & get ready for some colourful funky journey.

"Africa" is one of my favorite track by him, an afro-funk jam whose joyful & infectious horns chorus is hard to resist. With a clear hint at the "back to Motherland" Rasta myth, "Africa" is also a great example of Cedric's spiritual Rastafari faith, often present in his songs lyrics.
Here is my DJ-friendly nudisco-flavored edit of it.

Here's my drummed-up, percussion-rich rework of Diane Tell's timeless sensual groove "Je Suis En Amour", with a special focus on the warm and sexy chorus parts. In a post-coved world, I already picture myself playing this during a DJ set, at sunset, in a cosy open-air beach bar. Or maybe in a cool place overlooking the majestic Saint-Laurent with funky Quebec dancers :)

About Diane Tell :
Diane Tell is a Canadian musician who was born in Quebec City, Quebec. As one of Québec’s pioneering female singer-songwriters, she proposed her personal repertoire over the course of her first four albums. She won six Félix prizes before the age of 25: breakout artist, best artist, best album, best song and, twice, songwriter of the year. Several of her songs have become SOCAN Classics and Si j’étais un homme was inducted in the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2017.  Over the past 25 years, Tell has toured relentlessly, written, composed and recorded in Canada, France, the U.K. and Switzerland. In 2018, she produced her 15th studio album of original material in Montréal.
