On with the Rave Kid series. I've had this one planned for ages, but frankly, there's just not enough hours in the day for all this wonderful music. It is a sequel of sorts to Part 4, happy stomping breakbeat hardcore jungle techno. You know damn well what I'm talking about. A feel-good selection inspired chiefly by three much-loved rave tapes - DJ Sy's excellent Obsession 'Battle of the Scratchmasters' set, and a pair of Ellis Dee and Sy cassettes (Club Adrenalin maybe) picked up at Glastonbury '94, which got utterly rinsed over the course of a fortnight's camping holiday in Brittany. Naturellement, the tracklist is also heavily influenced by numerous Ratty, Slipmatt and Sublove mixes of that era. What a time to be alive and 18!

Autobiography Of A Rave Kid Part VI

De Underground Records was at 18 Sebert Road, Forest Gate, London. It was both a recording studio and a record shop and operated from 1991 until 1996. 

Owned by Mike De Underground (Michael Aymer), his brother Cool Hand Flex (Peter Aymer), Uncle 22 and DJ Randall, this independent business became one of the cornerstones in the development of the UK hardcore, jungle and drum and bass scene. The wider De Underground family included A-Sides, MC Fats, Marly Marl and Wacko. De Underground became synonymous with this sound and many well-known releases, including Lennie De Ice’s We Are IE Uncle 22’s Six Million Ways to Die, and Cool Hand Flex’s Melody Madness, were associated with the shop and its labels. 

During the time it was open, many of the UK’s jungle and drum and bass DJs, MCs and producers passed through its doors including people like Andy C, Bizzy B, Ellis Dee, Doc Scott, Fabio, Goldie, Grooverider, DJ Hype, Kenny Ken, Richie Montana, Peshay, DJ Rap, Slipmatt, Swan-E, DJ Zinc and many more. 

De Underground Records’ history and story is the history of mainly black working-class young people, and the incredible impact their ingenuity and creative expression had on a national phenomenon, helping to define a new and uniquely British sound and identity. 

Whilst the shop was highly influential and its owners were entrepreneurial creatives, there is little organised history recording their contribution. As part of Newham Heritage Month 2021, the project Crate Digging: The Influence of De Underground Records by Rendezvous Projects, aims to celebrate, share and preserve the cultural history of this Forest Gate institution.

This a 3 hour mix of Amen Brother tracks that was played by DJ AVIT on Centreforce Radio on the 25th September 2022. Now I wouldn't normally share mixes like this but the fact that DJ AVIT's mixing is so tight and his tune selection so on point, that I really wanted to share it with you all. Its a perfect showcase of what we are about and I love the shouts outs and how he gets so passionate about the music.

The label was established in 2018 as a means to release the back catalogue of renowned Jungle Techno label Underdog Recordings, which ran from 1993-1995. It quickly expanded from beyond the original goal and now reissues sought after, rare and classic records from the Jungle, Rave, Bleep House, Techno and Jungle Techno genres.

The Vinyl Fanatiks aim is to track down and work with the original artists from the early 1990’s, to reissue their music on vinyl only, and to support the record hunters and vinyl diggers from around the world with quality pressings and superb mastering; a way to show respect and share the story of those that created these incredible records.

The vision is not to focus on the obvious artists of that time but to dig a little deeper and find those that came and went but their legacy still holds true to this day. Some of these producers only released one record and vanished soon after but their music still resonates into the 21st century, accumulating new audiences across the globe, far beyond the catchment of the UK pirate radios and muddy fields of 25 years ago. What happened to these artists? Its Vinyl Fanatik’s mission to find out!

Each record captures a moment in time, a vibe that was true and innocent from a period when music was far more synonymous with rebellion and anarchy than today’s finely polished productions and conformist club pop. This music itself bred on the outskirts of society, fuelled by the passion of the rave, its lineage stemming from the Acid House era of 1988. Often produced on minimal equipment, with minimal skills and knowledge, its audio blueprint transcends to new generations, a rawness that no expensive audio plug in could ever create in this present day.

Vinyl Fanatiks wants to pay homage to these young producers who forged the foundations of the multi-million pound EDM scene we have now. Each of these artists has their own tale to tell, their own memories to share. Limited by their own geographical status within the UK, they somehow still all managed to connect and influence each other, years before the internet, mobile phones and social media that we have today. But the music knew no limits and had no boundaries, transcending generations to this day.
