Already firmly established as one of Europe’s leading taste-maker drum & bass labels, Blackout follow Telekinesis’ rip-roaring ‘Fight Club’ EP with Edge – a collaborative five tracker from German duo Neonlight & fellow German producer Wintermute.

Set for release on March 29th, ‘Edge’ adopts a diverse approach to the genre by moving away from the neurofunk style Blackout have become synonymous with, to craft something altogether harder, darker and edgier. Lead track ‘Guinea Pig’ is all broken beat, sharp synths and raging percussion, whilst ‘Influx’ works more conventional drum & bass rhythm, amidst a darker, almost gothic backdrop. Neonlight – having already released twice via Blackout – and Wintermute also extend their collaborative imagination on the lighter ‘Posthuman’ with faded, bleepy news-bulletin interludes serving as just one example of how intricate and well-balanced their sound design is right across the EP.

Given the vibrancy and darker, club-ready feel of ‘Edge’, Neonlight & Wintermute thus feel like natural choices to continue Blackout’s fast-building legacy and further cement themselves as some of Europe’s go-to drum & bass producers.

You ever hear jungle breaks echoing through an empty parking garage at 3 a.m.? That’s what this is for. Mean Streets is built for late-night runs and lost causes. It's a drum and bass tribute to the golden age of the PlayStation, back when everything felt faster, dirtier, realer. Back when we were still counting polygons kid. 

Think Wipeout 2097, Ridge Racer, Need for Speed. This is the sound of busted-up jungle drum and bass straight from a memory card left in the rain.

Yeah, there's liquid DnB in here, even some future garage, the kind that creeps in when the streets are empty and the rain won’t stop and you can't get those damned memories outta your head. But don’t get it twisted kid, the heart of this record is that early-2000s jungle mayhem. The stuff that came out of blown speakers and off bootleg discs. That sound that made you drive too fast and care too little.

Taking a step back, the inventor looked upon his creation with a mixture of pride and awe. Above him towered a clockwork golem with blood of fire and skin of steel, a protector of that which he had ordained worthy of protection. It’s profile displayed the raw strength of the forges from which it had been wrought, actualized by the servos and motors which drove its mighty body forwards in lumbering motion. Atop its head roared a constant blaze, its uncontainable life energy surging forth from any available outlet in a ferocious display of raw vitality. In a contemplative moment, the inventor then looked upon himself, diminutive and weak by comparison to the champion he had created. He thought of its purpose, shedding a momentary tear for those like him who might fall under its wrathful gaze, but then shook his head with renewed resolve. “It must be done” he said to himself, “They have not the STATE OF MIND necessary to rule this world”. Turning his eyes back to the golem, the inventor set his titanic creation forth on its grim path with naught but a single nod.

With a bellowing roar of the blaze within its skull, the golem emerged from the forest of its creation in a moment of stark contrast as it began to take its creators vengeance upon the city that lay before it. It was itself a city of steel and flame, which tore relentlessly at the lands around it in an exploitative & all consuming hunger. Jets of flame shot forth from the golem’s maw as it tread upon the inferior structures beneath it, reducing that built of this hunger to the component parts it so wantonly consumed. As it stood within the inferno, the golem itself began to feel its own gnashing teeth, the heat of the flames slowly stripping its steel skin to the bone. With a final titanic roar the golem reached a point of criticality, exploding in a massive gout of flame and molten shrapnel which leveled all that remained of what had once been the great city. Watching from high within the forest, the inventor nodded his head in a farewell to his creation, assured by it’s ultimate cry that this land was safe once again from those who would do it harm.


STATE OF MIND returns to EATBRAIN with four reimaginings of their past tracks by themselves and others within the harder side of Drum & Bass. Receiving a flip by Italian neurofunk trio IHR is the notorious collab with label boss Jade 'HIGHLANDER', which features the addition of a motive & fluid reece bassline atop the track’s already driving drumbeat for a dancefloor devastating sonic combination. STATE OF MIND themselves present a VIP of GIANT, which smashes forth on massive drums accentuated by simultaneous bass stabs in a titanic sprint beneath detuned tonal sprites. BYPASS is remixed by MOB TACTICS, whom bypass nothing as they push the track into overdrive in a flurry of furious basses, frenetic arpeggios and brief moments of levity provided by snippets of vocals. Closing the EP is the SYNERGY remix of TIME SLIP FT. KRYPTOMEDIC, which rides the MC’s narration upwards in an ever intensifying crescendo towards a distorted realm of metallic basses that rocket out above their electrified companions and an unstoppable drumbeat. In all, the STATE OF MIND REMIXES morph some of the prolific duo’s most powerful track on EATBRAIN into monstrous new forms, setting them up for further dominance on future dancefloors.

Over time however, we have learned to fight back. We have crafted labyrinthine underground networks dedicated to defeating them. We have pioneered numerous advances in the realms of science to allow us to go beyond ourselves, to face these monsters head on as we battle for our very survival. Even as cataclysm rocked our world and the sky fell in pieces around us, we have endured, for that is our way. Yet for all of these trials we have overcome, for all of the great beasts we have slain, we have yet to face our greatest trial. For now, at the turning of the clock, this world’s most terrible fury shall come for us with all of its might.

Long buried within the world’s deepest depths, entombed under layer upon layer of time and age and passed over by century upon century, a behemoth unlike any other has slumbered for unknown millenia. This being was a Progenitor, the first of its kind to walk the lands of this world, and thus it is inexorably bound to it. Those who have stood against it before have never managed only to seal it once more within the depths from whence it came, and therein it has been gathering strength since. Prophecy foretells that the Progenitor shall return to the land in the footsteps of the ninety-nine monstrosities below it, and our warriors affirm that the ninety-ninth such great beast has been slain. Thus, we now face our ultimate reckoning, one that could unmake the very world itself. Best ready yourself, dear warrior, for at this moment the Progenitor comes for us all, and it is most assuredly ANGRY.
