"All I want to do is express what I love." The beloved Berghain resident talks about learning from failure, putting in the time and how good sound systems have changed his life.

Born and bred in Minneapolis, Zak Khutoretsky, AKA DVS1, has been throwing and playing raves for decades. Now 47, he's at the top of his game. As one of Berghain's most popular residents and a producer known for his deep and versatile sound, he's amassed thousands of followers around the world, releasing on Klockworks, Transmat and Ostgut Ton, in addition to his own label, HUSH.

Not just an artist, Khutoretsky has garnered a reputation for speaking critically about the challenges facing the electronic music community, notably through his essay about the battle between art and entertainment, and more recently through the inauguration of his revenue sharing platform ASlice. The organisation was designed in 2020 as an antidote to the pay disparity between DJ earnings and producer earnings, and its basic conceit is that DJs submit playlists of their tracks and share small percentages of their gig fees to be redistributed among the artists whose tracks they've played.

In this RA Exchange live from ADE, Khutoretsky talks with journalist Christine Kakaire about the platform and the impetus behind it, as well as his underlying tendency to be a "fixer,"  from the problems in his house to the issues he sees plaguing his community. Listen to the episode in full.

Leading up to his debut Tresor release Backward Improvement, @ufo95ufo95 has prepared a mix of ultra forward motion and cavernous four to the floor thumps. Starting with tense dissonant chords and sparse hits reverberating in a sci-fi atmosphere, the mix launches us into an hour of hefty techno shuffles, and rebounding rhythms and rumbles. Alongside the unreleased cuts are select tracks from the Sandwell District crew, like ‘Hunting Lodge’ with icy grains flowing between synth stabs while heaving kicks pulsate and implode. “I made this mix on Ableton and added some 909 jams. The major part of the mix contains my unreleased tracks mixed with techno classics from Sandwell District, Silent Servant, Shifted & more. I went through deep, hypnotic, dub and club oriented techno during these 60 minutes.”

Seamlessly transitioning between heavy techno tools and soulful house rhythms, Carmine can be found mixing tracks at sold-out warehouse shows and clubs across the US.

"For my debut supplement, I wanted to bring a new flavor of tracks that reflect my latest inspirations. While four-to-the-floor grooves and techno remain at the heart of my sets, I've been increasingly drawn to more synth-focused and melodic sounds, which adds more color and depth to my usual selections. Recently, I’ve also stumbled across many great house tracks from the early 2000s, as well as contemporary sounds that echo that Y2K style. For this mix, I aimed to bring all of those influences into a one-hour set, trying to strike the right balance between songs that push the envelope in their respective genres and those that pay homage to influences from years past. I hope you enjoy this mix as much as I enjoyed putting it together.”

"This fully original production set has been one of the most challenging and personal projects I have ever had the pleasure of putting together. This last year I've had the privilege of spending heaps of time in the studio and elsewhere working alongside my peers who continue to inspire me day in and day out. I’ve learned a lot about myself as an artist and producer, and this mix touches a bit on all of the emotions that have come with it (including a borderline unacceptable level of cheek). This particular selection of mostly unreleased tracks pulls influences ranging from breaks, dembow, hard house, garage and hardgroove whilst still maintaining a cohesive sound and raw energy. Yuzu ゆず is the alias for SF based DJ and member of the Vitamin1000 collective. Aiming to contrast the hard, fast, and in-your-face techno, he finds comfort in the deepest corners of psychedelic and hypnotic rhythms. He pulls influence from his Japanese background and often layers sounds from key figures including Wata Igarashi, DJ Nobu, and DJ MARIA.

"It’s 5am. You’re in the warehouse. You can only make out the silhouettes of the people dancing next to you but you’re locked in. That’s the feeling I want to embody with this mix.
