It’s been more than three weeks since Russia has invaded Ukraine, destroying Ukrainian cities and shattering the lives of millions of people, whose world will never be the same again. The Ukrainian music and culture community is devastated by the shocking crimes of the Russian government. We wish for peace in our country above all, and we are doing everything in our power to support the people of Ukraine.

Right now It is most critical to raise funds for the Ukrainians bravely defending their country, and for those, who had to leave their homes behind. Therefore, Standard Deviation has joined forces with Mystictrax —a Ukrainian label run by Lostlojic, for our most important release: РАЗОМ ЗА УКРАЇНУ / TOGETHER FOR UKRAINE — a compilation by 65 Ukrainian and International artists. All profits from this release will be split between the following charity funds, supporting the people of Ukraine:

- The ‘Return Alive’ Fund, helping at the Ukrainian front
- National Bank of Ukraine Fundraising Account for Humanitarian Assistance
- ‘Ukraine Pride’ Fund for LGBTQIA+ soldiers and LGBTQIA+ people affected by the war

Ukrainian Field Notes VA is a fundraising compilation with a difference, music with a backstory that gives a first-hand account of the unfolding events since the full-scale Russian invasion in real time, and presents an overview of the changing face of the Ukrainian music scene dictated by blackouts and curfew restrictions.

What started off as an ongoing series of interviews with Ukrainian artists for the experimental music website A Closer Listen has now become a book comprising all 170 interviews conducted over the course of a year mapping out the electronic and experimental scene in Ukraine.

All musicians involved were asked to submit a track composed after February 24, 2022 to mark its publication. The resulting material reflects the diaristic nature of the book and deals with PTSD, displacement, separation, and loss, and shows at the same time the strength and resilience of Ukrainian artists with a meditative and uplifting reach.

The track listing follows the chronological order of the interviews, switching from ambient and electronic to classical and experimental in a seemingly random fashion, but war is chaotic and shattering, or as Serhii Zhadan writes in Sky Above Kharkiv, “War sharply changes ways of seeing, changes feelings.” Ukrainian Field Notes is a testament to the shifting sonic and human landscape.

Ukrainian Field Notes VA - це благодійна фандрайзінгова компіляція, що відрізняється від інших, музика з передісторією, яка розповідає з перших вуст про події, що розгортаються з моменту повномасштабного російського вторгнення в режимі реального часу, і представляє огляд зміни обличчя української музичної сцени, продиктованої відключенням електроенергії та обмеженнями комендантської години.

Те, що починалося як серія інтерв'ю з українськими музикантами для сайту експериментальної музики A Closer Listen, тепер перетворилося на книгу, що містить усі 170 інтерв'ю, взятих протягом року, які окреслюють електронну та експериментальну сцену в Україні.

Щоб відзначити її публікацію, всім музикантам, які брали участь в інтерв'ю, було запропоновано надіслати трек, написаний після 24 лютого 2022 року. Отриманий матеріал відображає щоденниковий характер книги і стосується ПТСР, переміщення, розлуки та втрати, а також демонструє силу та стійкість українських митців з медитативним та піднесеним звучанням.

Трек-лист відповідає хронологічному порядку інтерв'ю, переходячи від ембієнту та електроніки до класики та експериментальної музики у, здавалося б, випадковий спосіб, але війна є хаотичною та руйнівною, або, як пише Сергій Жадан у "Небі над Харковом", "війна різко змінює способи бачення, змінює почуття". "Ukrainian Field Notes VA" - це свідчення мінливого звукового та людського ландшафту.
