Intergalactic Madness // for Austin Cassell's show on Radio Free Robotron

@FluidMatter started off in SeekSickSound, playing in SSS nights in parisian clubs such as La Station or L'Alimentation Générale, until he moved to the Netherlands and simultaneously started producing his own music. In 2021 he launches with Solma and natural limit his label @VirtualForestRecords, a testing ground for all sorts of sounds centered on - but not limited to - the deeper side of techno and bass music. As his label invites promising hybrid talent from the French scene and beyond, Fluid Matter releases a first EP on UK-based label Simply Deep, and a second solo EP in 2022 on Virtual Forest.


Refusing to stick to one vibe is part of Fluid Matter's sonic DNA, and his DJ-sets reflect his multiple inspirations. When building a set, he interlocks carefully-dug gems into a living jigsaw puzzle to experiment with rhythmic pattern complexity and tension dynamics. As a whole, his mixes follow a clear logic and direction while drawing on a wide range of sounds and styles, just like in this Exocet episode inspired by the diel vertical migration.



≋  Why did you choose this theme ?

F-M : I've always seen the ocean as a sort of parallel world with its own rules and creatures, and learning about the diel vertical migration really reinforced this idea. It is the largest synchronous migration on Earth, with massive numbers of animals migrating daily from the surface to the depths of the ocean, avoiding the sunlight to stay out of sight of predators. It's also a huge contributor to the carbon pump in the oceans, as the migrators feed on the surface and then bring all that assimilated carbon back down to the depths during the night. It's really fascinating and alien, like a global pilgrimage for survival by all the critters that live in the dark.

≋ What pictures were brought to your imagination when preparing this episode ?

F-M : I made this set in 3 parts, separated by tempo changes, which correspond pretty well to the three steps I see in the diel vertical migration. First we zoom in on the surface of the ocean at nightfall. Progressively more and more creatures come into the field of view as the migrators are arriving. Zooplankton wiggle and move about in all directions, while bigger animals feed at a more leisurely pace. As the tempo progressively increases, time runs out and sunrise finally approaches, signalling the end of the feast. All the critters start their migration to the safer depths, from the smaller unicellular organisms to the larger sharks. The third and last part describes the depths, with a darker and more barren aesthetic, until the last 2 tracks of the mix that sound the return of hunger as the day goes on and food is scarce. This is the impulse that will start the cycle anew as soon as the night falls.

"Bird Matrix" was made just after Actress finished writing his most recent album Ghettoville. “My studio was going through a transition, so I was testing all the equipment, and that was one of the first tunes that came out of those experiments,” he explains. It’s a fittingly exploratory tune for a mix that balances traditional functionality with dance music’s cutting edge.
