Reduced is a new series that strips sound back to its most transcendental, restorative and atmospheric textures to block out the noise and aid focus, attunement and relaxation. Each one will be paired with a mental health charity and be accompanied by an interview focussed on self-care. The combination of all three will create an evolving resource of knowledge and experience that provides solace, inspiration, reassurance and company in difficult times.

Mei (aka Temple Rat) is a Dj and music producer from Shanghai. Her music uses unique sound samples of natural environments. By combining the tranquility of Ambient tunes with ACID beats of the 90s and fierce drums she constructs a unique sound mixing modern vibes and ancient oriental rhythms. Mei has been exploring and expanding the many possibilities of music and sound creating this energy into a rhythm turning the dance floor into a frenzy. 
Mei released her Erhu ambient album Spring Dawn on Tokyo’s Kagerou Records and her latest works have been featured on Hong Kong’s FUFU Records Double Happiness 2021 edition as well as on Bangkok's Siamese Twins Records Katha compilation.

Sonic experiments derived from syncopated rhythms, intricately crafted ambiences, and patiently evolving textures, Pattrn’s work as a producer bases itself on the creation of space and its perception for the audience. Playing violin since the age of four and later on majoring in both acousmatic music composition and sound engineering, Pattrn’s precision is the fruit of a lifelong dedication to music of all forms, from creation in itself or through his implications in Brussels’ scene.

Beyond the years of technical know-how and self improvement in production, DJing, and live sets,  Brice Deloose aka Pattrn has been an active member of the local scene for quite some time. Cocreator of FTRSND, Brussels By Night Federation, Initiate, as well as having been the artistic director of Fuse club, Pattrn has spent much of his time promoting local artists and collectives to push forward Brussels' underground.

Having shared the decks with the likes of Luke Slater, Luigi Tozzi, Claudio PRC, Kangding Ray, Svreca, and many more, Pattrn uses his sets to impose his world of seamless hypnotic music to lure passionates for always one last dance.

The 10th chapter of Biotechnology podcasts belongs to @dukdatura Originally from Mongolia, but living in Warsaw, she is an very talented DJ  distinguished by her uncommon selection and technical skill. A member of the Drumaty and @IMPRO collectives, as well as the duo DUBS, which she co-founded with @qbs Duk loves to combine bass music, broken beats with techno. She finds herself especially well in deep and dub sound areas. All this can be heard strongly in the recording, there are also a lot of musical excursions into Detroit. You can feel the depth here, the rhythmic fantasy, and all this is served in a club-like, danceable way (the set, which is worth mentioning, was recorded during one of the IMPRO events). ‘Kronosphere’ is trying to define this phenomenon by reproducing the sensation of an outbursting zen state.
This is a frozen moment when everything is resonating in beautiful harmony.
The sounds are creating a sense of being transported through different sublayers of reality, resulting in a sonic voyage into the unknown depths of the psyche.

Mei, also known as Temple Rat, (@templerat) grew up near Chengdu in the lush Western China Sichuan Basin. At just the tender age of nine, she began to learn the mysterious traditional Chinese called Chinese Erhu. Known to the Western world as the Chinese violin or the Chinese two-stringed fiddle, the instrument is carved from wood and snakeskin, and played with a bow. 

While enamoured by the world of traditional Chinese music, Mei yearned for something more. With the musical structures of the Erhu blazed in her muscle memory, she eventually carved her own original path with it. As fate would have it, she later stumbled upon Chengdu's underground electronic music scene in the later parts of her formative years. It was only a matter of time before she began fusing traditional Chinese folk music with minimalistic techno sounds.

On her unique take on music, Mei says: “I usually start my sets by playing the Erhu alone, to create a sense of space, mystery and surprise among my listeners. Then, I'd add electronic and industrial sounds to fill the space, bring my audience on an emotional journey, and produce a unique, memorable atmosphere."

Over the years, this maven steadily improved her skills, the results of which are her live Erhu performances with 4x4 electronic beats. In 2015, she became known as 'Temple Rat' and has been performing under the moniker since.

In 2017, she released her first EP under ADE China Pavilion Records. If by now, her stage name sounds familiar to your ears, it's because you may have seen her much-raved performance in Shanghai’s 2019 Boiler Room. The same year saw her collaboration with Tokyo-based producer Ryogo Yamamori; together, they released her latest album (under Kagerou Records), now available on Beatport and iTunes.

According to Mei, her unique musical on electronic music is somewhat symbolic of the natural and religious environment she grew up in. If we're being technical, we'd describe her sounds as "ancient oriental rhythms" that carry fragments of 90’s ACID elements (also her favourite "modern" sound).

Over the last few years Temple Rat has gathered fans from across the globe with her re-imagining of Chinese traditional music and in 2019 her debut Boiler Room attracted a great deal of attention as the magic of the music captivated the Shanghai club goers. 

Temple Rat released their debut project Spring Dawn in August 2019: The EP is a captivating work that continues to merge the two worlds of traditional and present day by using forward thinking beautifully recorded sounds and punchy perfectly mixed drums. The future is brighter than ever for China’s electronic music scene as it rapidly becomes one of the most exciting and prominent spaces for dance music in the world, and Temple Rat is for sure one of the brightest artists at the forefront.
