Few DJs could adequately represent the last three decades of New York nightclub history as well as Justin Strauss.

He's been spinning since he was 17 and has visited the booth of nearly every dance club in New York and around the world, pioneering his own distinctive sound, and becoming one of the most sought-after remixers and producers. He has worked with artists such as Depeche Mode, Hot Chip, Sergio Mendez, Tina Turner, Jimmy Cliff, B-52s, Luther Vandross, 808 State, Malcolm McClaren, Skinny Puppy, Goldfrapp, LCD Soundsystem to name a few and on over 200 records.

As half of the production duos, Whatever/Whatever and A/JUS/TED, he continued to produce and mix records, working on remixes for the likes of Hot Chip, William Onyeabor, LCD Soundsystem, Blood Orange, Holy Ghost!, Franz Ferdinand, Beyonce and working on new projects like 'Extra Credit' with Joe Goddard of Hot Chip & Marcus Marr, and with Max Pask under their Each Other moniker, whose debut E.P. was mixed by Soulwax and released this year on their Deewee label.

On episode 8 I was feeling nostalgic, recovering from an all-night party, while still mourning the losses of Leonard Cohen, Pete Burns and David Mancuso, and reeling from the heaviness of recent world news. The selection was eclectic, even schizoid, revisiting 80s proto-Multi Culti jams, highlighting new stuff from Dreems and Soft Hair, and digging up obscure rarities from far and wide. hopefully you can find some thread between it all and see where I was 'coming from.'

Thankfully, I was also accompanied by Thomash and El Fo of Voodoohop, who played a live set together for the second hour.

I'm off on tour in Australasia for a couple of months, so not sure when I'll get around to recording the next episode...

now weekend of 5 gigs makes you go deep into your crates and folders. this is the opening of the night at opium club on August 14 2020. lots of music here from some 4-5 years back, a territory that is somehow usually forgotten. lots of these tracks appeared in old mixes, but it felt good playing them out again. have a ride.
