Mind Vortex return… And they’re packing some serious heat. Following the huge success of ‘Alive’ and ‘Arc’ earlier this year, here we find the duo presenting two of their most demonstratively dark, powerhouse pieces to date. Prepare to be blown away… 

‘Gravity’ is built up around a sharp, spiky riff that punches its way up and down the scale. Icy, hair-raising and galvanised with a genuine sense of urgency and danger, you can file this one under ‘concentrated undiluted dancefloor business’. 

Driven by heavyweight kicks and an obese bass groove, there’s no escaping its natural forces. Just like gravity itself. Trust us: Newton would be pulling some serious bass faces if he knew his theory had influenced this tearing slab of audio attitude. 

From attitude to altitude, ‘Catapult’ flings you into outer space the second you hear its purring metallic intro while snippets of vocals tease and please throughout. Then, without any warning whatsoever, an enormous synth riff ignites. Sawing through the mix with the power of an industrial timber mill, it winds up and up and up with raw audio insanity. Dropping into the duo’s most intense, muscular bass riffs to date, ‘Catapult’ is nagging, hooky and charged with the perfect amount of tech tenacity. Bona fide bass dynamite, if you’ve caught Andy C playing any time in the last few months, you’ll be well aware of its outrageous dancefloor effect. Truly massive. 

Two incredible pieces of underground drum & bass, two more reasons to keep your ears locked into Mind Vortex. This really is a very special release.

Staying true to his name, Stealth has craftily taken centre stage. Every record he's released oozing with sophistication has repeatedly stolen the spotlight. And this next one is no exception.
The production connoisseur yet again goes for the aural jugular, using ProgRAM as a launch pad. Stealth demonstrates the imprint's forward thinking movements and command of a genre which often goes unmatched. The relationship has been harmonious; alongside ProgRAM, he's already made a crater sized impact within the dnb community... And it's not difficult to see why.

'Homage' leads in a tightly fashioned intensity. Dark, brooding and with plucky percussion, it's a tribute to the sound Dillinja mastered. An instantly recognisable vocal sample is filtered through the record's menace, meandering perfectly between the bassline's thumps which eventually drop us into LFO-lead chaos. Piece by piece the main melody begins to build, throbbing until it completely over-takes the record's more humanistic elements. Audibly stocky, yet with a dimension that rings true of Stealth's icy production, it's a relentless roller with a nasty bite.

Next up, 'Smash It' still holds onto the merciless setting of its predecessor, but also offers something completely different. With a bristling rhythm that steps its way into a haunting crescendo, Stealth uses this break to highlight the track's imposing detail; it trickles, floods and then the dam breaks due to the build up's audible weight. Progressing deeper into the mix, the track is underpinned by quaking sub bass. An insistent kick and snap of drums merges against steeply elevating note loops, laying out Stealth's finely combed conundrum of complex yet hard hitting composition. Both 'Homage' and 'Smash It' receive the innovative-stamp of approval, playing on more contemporary elements but also delving deep into the 90s, promising both tracks remain timeless.

Stealth is pushing his influence into every corner, with his late night vibes commanding even the hardest of crowds. So, yet again, it's time to get with the ProgRAM, and succumb to one of the scene's biggest contenders.

First vinyl sampler of Occulti Music’s latest album project. On the A side we find head honcho Impish delivering massively with Sky. It’s suitable for the dancefloor, but still with plenty of groove, funk and organic touches. Next up Cutworks presents a more modest vibe with Top Floor. It’s based around a couple of sultry, sweet jazz licks underlined by an abysmal sub. Watch out for the switch up that blends the rough with the smooth, what more could you ask for?

Second vinyl sampler of Occulti Music’s latest album project. We kick off with Jumpets by long time drum & bass veteran Electrosoul System. It’s an uplifting slice of drum & bass with infectious vocal cuts, smooth chords and perfect balanced lightweight drums. On the flip Agbo dives into the deepness with a minimal, hypnotic halfstepper. This is 100% soundsystem music with ethnic influences and plenty of bassweight for the get-down crew. Keep an eye out for this guy!

Since Document One stormed onto Technique's roster, this production duo have set about marking out their very own niche in the D&B spectrum. Songwriters' musicality and an appreciation for multiple genres, while still keeping focus firmly on the dancefloor, makes for a powerful combination. Now, with this latest release, they're back to consolidate their status and draw together some more threads in their ongoing multi-form musical narrative.

“I Got a Fever” wastes no time in laying out the formula. A swing-time low-end perforates smoky jazz club ambience, with loose percussion holding down the beat. The bass morphs between upright plucks and synthetic sweeps to neatly underline Document One's approach of providing a slick modern twist on foundation sounds. As the track builds, a vocal sample signals its time for the bass and drum to tighten up and drop into a cowbell-led funkstepping ride. This is summer music, as much about fun and partying with a smile on your face as it is about serious musicianship.

Then there's a whole different take on the summertime vibe for “Follow Me”. Ethereal vocals float over crisp and punchy drums, accompanied by long liquid bass tones, delicate trumpet and laid-back keys. It's a gentle soulful roller... But then it's suddenly not that at all. Document One puncture the atmosphere like a sharp intake of breath and kick us with a boot made from filthy bass. And now the light and floating sounds from before just serve to accentuate the heavyweight drive of the rave engine this tune has become. When the dancefloor needs a kickstart, here's one to draw for.

So, Document One have proved once again that they not only understand the palette of sounds and textures offered by jazz, funk and soul, but they're also willing and able to twist them into their own paradigm. They make music to make musicians nod in appreciation, but to make everyone else rave hard.

Over the past six years, Joe Moses has done it all. Under his Need For Mirrors name, his efforts have resulted in a series of releases which have rightly been labelled as classics. From Metalheadz and Playaz to Dispatch and Spearhead, NFM has been everywhere. 

Also one of the names behind the legendary London d&b night Soul In Motion, Need For Mirrors' quantity is easily matched by his quality. His excellent music continues on HZN093, the Lvrs EP for Horizons Music, which contains three tracks on the physical release.

Wow' is the a-side, bringing elements of the old skool to a decidedly modern pallette. A slow burner, this one sets its stall out over a delayed intro. Dropping down into some classic late night vibes, the tune picks up to display its full beauty. NFM create the atmosphere, with some live sounding effects and rolling beats. Feel the pulse and feel the flow, this one is simply Wow. 

On the flip, 'Down Time' again runs with a retro inflection, this time upping the pace and letting the sounds envelop your very soul. Playing around with melody and tempo, Moses creates a new world at every turn. One minute there's a liquid vibe, before adding in more bass, this is truly a tune for everyone. 'Lvrs' meanwhile, brings things down a little, with removed synths marking the backdrop for funky, jazzy chords and some frankly brilliant drums. There's different sounds creeping in all the time, so look forward to this one surprising and delighting you.

Battering our way into the new year with a quartet of forward-thinking grooves, the label’s sixth release is chock-a-block with floor busters.

Nitri ignites proceedings with stealth-like prowess. Opening with a series of infectious clicks and whirrs, his engine purrs with a pensive funk that isn’t realised fully until the delicious vocal and bassline bounce kick in. The epitome of a contemporary roller, this stripped back groove attack has been a highlight of Andy C’s sets for the past few months, causing major commotions amongst both the raving crew and fellow DJs whenever he drops it.

Audio & Meth follow. And they do so with an almighty switch-flip. Hot on the heels of their monstrous ‘Gamma’ on Audio’s latest album ‘Soul Magnet’, the duo continue to strut their heavyweight co-lab stuff with ‘Alone’. Drenched in drama and grizzling bass tears, ‘Alone’ opens with a cavalcade of haunting horns before dropping into an all-out filth workout. Spitting snub-nosed sonics, it’s like the late 90s all over again… But with production skills our last-century D&B forefathers could only dream of.

Up next: Eastcolors who’s served up a track that’s in grave danger of literally living up to its title. ‘Murderer’ harbours a bassline so deadly it could bump your dancefloor to death with its endless mutations and manipulations. Sprung with a fine-tuned funk and arranged with dynamite dynamics, this is one murder case all dancefloor detectives want to solve.

It’s down to Paul B to bring this speaker-smashing set to a fitting conclusion. A dab-hand at this D&B game since the turn of the century, ‘Drop By Drop’ shows just why the Russian artist is widely regarded as ‘the producer’s producer’. A funky fusion of minimal and electro and classical reference points, it’s a roller that just keeps on giving on every listen. Simple but outrageously effective, it’s an exemplary lesson in how to make a nagging hook.
