Bella Ciao is a song that was used by the Italian Resistance in their fight against Mussolini, Fascist Italy, and occupying Nazi troops during World War II. Thought to have originated with rice laborers in Italy in their protests against back-breaking working conditions, it was co-opted by anti-fascist movements around the world. 

Today, the people of the United States of America are facing a threat against democracy and human rights unlike any we have ever experienced in our history. A government hostile to working-class people is cutting benefits, reducing workers’ rights, and eroding economic protections at the behest of corporate oligarchs. This government is carrying out the early steps of genocide through efforts to deport all immigrants and erase LGBTQ+ identity while empowering ethno-fascists. It is time for us to recognize the threat this government poses to our ideals, follow the path blazed by anti-fascists during WWII, and take up the cry of Bella Ciao.
