Bobby Marin has been one of the main contributors and a leading figure behind the latin Boogaloo movement in the mid 60s in New York producing and working close together with stars such us Joe Cuba, Eddie Palmieri, Machito, Riccardo Marrero, not to mention his own combo the legendary Latin Blues Band, recently sampled by DJ Premier as the hook to Christina Aguilera's 'Ain't No Other Man'. Sometimes it takes a few bumps to find the right direction; often it involves experience, guts and self-belief to trust yourself and venture from one to find another. The Milk are a band that believe with utter conviction that they've now found their way.

Fuelled by a rediscovery of the music and artists that originally inspired their formation, the four walls of their studio were ablaze with a soundtrack of Bill Withers, Isaac Hayes and the Isley Brothers throughout the songwriting process for their new album.

Eager to share their new songs, Deliver Me was released as a limited 7” single in November 2014 - finding its way onto the playlists of BBC 6 Music’s Lauren Laverne, Huey Morgan and Gilles Peterson - while The Milk’s dedicated fans packed out Tufnell Park’s The Dome for the band’s triumphant live return. The band unveiled their new songs in full for the first time to an intimate sold out show at Hackney’s Oslo in July.

The Bees' Paul Butler, who proved his production mastery with Michael Kiwanuka's Mercury Prize nominated debut, invited the band to record at Chale Abbey, a medieval barn on the Isle of Wight. Guided by Butler, the sessions captured the genuine version of The Milk - the sounds and honesty of soul.

The Milk play a headline UK tour this autumn.

Long overdue for a vinyl pressing, Kenny Dope’s extended mix of “Shy As A Butterfly” by The Mighty Sceptres is now available on a proper 7in. The B-side features a killer dance floor-ready cumbia rework of “Nothing Seems To Work Right” by Spark Arrester.

With a well-received debut album under their belt and notable song placements in shows such as Ray Donovan on Showtime,   The Mighty Sceptres drop a new 7in single featuring Kenny Dope’s extended mix of “Shy As A Butterfly”, previously only available as a bonus on their digital album. With collectors, record shops, and fans alike clamoring for a vinyl version, the 7in was hands down the preferred format of choice. Hailing from Blacksburg VA where he’s been a mainstay of the local music scene and purveyor of all things funky, Spark Arrester’s cumbia rework is a perfect fit on the B-side rounding out a single that’s sure to keep bodies moving on the dance floor all summer long and beyond.

The Mighty Sceptres: Shy As A Butterfly b/w Nothing Seems To Work Right 7"

Combining traditional African rhythmic textures with melodies and grooves steeped in American funk, soul, and jazz, Ikebe Shakedown offers a unique and powerful sound. The 8-piece, Brooklyn-based band formed in early 2009 and, after a slew of dates around NYC, recorded their debut 7” single and EP, Hard Steppin', at Dunham Studios (home of Menahan Street Band, Budos Band, Charles Bradley and more). The 5-track offering, released on Colemine Records, received high praise from critics, fans, and distributors.

The Gene Dudley Group represents an outpouring of deep soul and funk music from obscenely talented 27 year-old multi-instrumentalist, Gene Dudley.  

The debut album, “Saturday Shifting”, was recorded in a cupboard in Muswell Hill, North London, and features the man himself on trumpet, saxophone, drums, bass, guitar and piano. On a couple of occasions, though, Gene had to budge over to allow fellow musicians Ewan Whyte and Tom Jackson to fit in a play a solo or two, but other than that, everything you hear on this album comes from the mind, mouth, fingers and heart of Mr. Gene Dudley Esq.

Fans of labels like Truth & Soul and Daptone will relish these sonorous soulful offerings, but the influences on this album are wide ranging. Tracks like “When The Gorilla Get Grip’ and “The New Lots Of Cooperstown” conjure up 60’s spy soundtracks, but elsewhere there are afro-beat influences on “The Hilo Bay Halfway” and more easy, introspective moments on “Minnie” and “Do The Stanley Weinberger”.  Just when you think you’ve got Gene Dudley’s sound pinned down, the album culminates with a real game changer in the shaped of the brilliantly titled “Waxing Unwaxed Lemons”, a quirky, electronic tinged nugget that should please many a dance floor.

In the live arena, rather than trying to play all the instruments himself, Gene deploys a quartet of top notch young musicians to help him out (whilst Gene mixes it up between bass and keys throughout the set) as witnessed at the recent Hot 8 Brass Band gig in London, The Gene Dudley Group’s debut live show.

Since that first outing, the group have played to much acclaim at venues such as London’s XOYO, and will be celebrating the release of “Saturday Shifting” with a live album launch, in support of label mate Henri-Pierre Noel, at The Jazz Café on July 13th. A night, and an album, not to be missed.
