Joel Holmes – Into The Abyss (Kryptox 2023)
Once known as a techno city, Berlin has quietly become the capital for jazz bands in recent years. While the queues in front of the techno clubs become shorter and shorter, the city is slowly converting into a melting pot for all sorts of musicians and artists with amazing instrumentalists, producers and bands from all over the world moving to the German capital to create a new scene. As a result, Berlin has come out with some of the craziest, non-conformist types of music. Toy Tonics sister label Kryptox has started to establish itself as a key platform for this new scene.
One of the protagonists of this scene is Joel Holmes, the former band leader of Carl Craig's synthesizer ensemble and keyboarder of (Grammy-nominated) cult band Roy Hargrove. Joel Holmes’ new album ‘Into The Abyss’ is a perfect capturing of the current moment in Berlin. The album features other main players of its new scene such as Ziggy Zeitgeist from Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange, as well as tapping into international talent such as acclaimed flutist Tenderlonious from London.
Few people bridge the gap between jazz and electronic music as successfully as Holmes. Over the past years, he’s been working with some of jazz’s most relevant artists, incl. Roy Hargrove, Curtis Fuller, Javon Jackson, Nnenna Freelon, Curtis Lundy and Jimmy Cobb. Once tapped into electronic music too, he made records with legends such as Carl Craig. Working with techno artists made him curious about the new dance scene, resulting in his moved to Berlin, where he quickly started making music with the likes of Cody Currie and Kapote.
Joel describes the album in his own words as follows: "The next album "Into the Abyss" is the first time I recorded music through the lens of different landscapes and on 2 different continents reflecting the times of today’s music that is mirroring what is happening in our communities and worlds today. From dark colors to light, music is so diverse, and I tried to reflect this in my album. This is also the first time I have had this many special guests on an album. So I’m excited about this.“

Joel Holmes - Broken Styles (feat. Tenderlonious and Roberto Manzin)

For his third full-length release, Matt Emonson AKA Mat/Matix has remixed and mastered a tape of his 2013-2016 creations dubbed ‘850,’ an ode to his 1997 Volvo station wagon. Moved by Larry Heard’s Sceneries Not Songs Vol. 1-2, Emonson has painted his own aural landscape including batches of uptempo synth funk, street soul, g-funk, and jazzy house. Toiled over for many years, this instrumental album is the sound of a young producer discovering their unique darkened west-coast sound. In ’Mountain Mist,’ a wall of drum breaks and synths give way to a soulful guitar solo. ‘Loons’ takes a swing groove through dusty layers of classic 12 bit samples. ‘Robertson’s Jam’ is a dance floor workout of digital synth textures reminiscent of a midnight drive through the city. 850 is a nostalgic 40-minute journey to bump in the car, feel on a pair of headphones, or jam at a house party. Named in direct reference to arguably one of the greatest albums ever created, "Giant Steps" by John Coltrane, "Giant Stops" pays homage to the rich legacy of jazz while pushing the boundaries of the genre with a contemporary twist. The album seamlessly blends jazz, hip-hop, and electronic elements to create a unique sonic landscape that is both nostalgic and modern.

For Minus & MRDolly, "Giant Stops" represents a new chapter in his evolution as a musician, showcasing his growth and commitment to pushing boundaries in his genre-bending style. Taking inspiration from the creative process of Makaya McCraven, the album features dynamic instrumentals backed by a live band, with Minus & MRDolly's signature lyricism and storytelling shining through both the instrumentals and the lended work of guest musician such as Meta_ or Luca Argel. By using this production method the album takes a bold stand for the importance of sampling as an art form hoping to encourage listeners to appreciate the rich history and evolution of hip hop and to recognize the essential role that sampling has played in shaping the genre.

As a nod to his Portuguese roots, "Giant Stops" represents a deeper exploration of the artist's identity and a commitment to looking inward to find creative inspiration. Living In A City - Fusion, Soul & Samba from Japan

Following on from Never Come Down, which received some serious love from BBC 6 Music mainstays Huey Morgan and Cerys Matthews,  Colours is a true highlight of the band’s forthcoming third LP, and is probably their most socially conscious release to date.

Having held back on their own political colours on record at least, the recent rise of populism, as well as growing divisions and prejudice in society have caused the Milk to nail theirs to the mast somewhat with a single that’s ultimately about unity. 

“All colours will agree in the dark” is a sentiment that touched on shared feelings of disquiet the band had been experiencing outside the studio walls. Having shaped and polished this premise into the lyrics and melody of the track, this attitude was carried into the production and recording process, where the track demanded the right atmosphere to catch the perfect performance. 

Four life-long friends, Ricky Nunn (vocals), Mitch Ayling (drums) Luke Ayling (bass) and  Dan Le Gresley (guitar) formed their first band when they were still at school in Essex, playing countless working men’s clubs, and finally became The Milk. 

Since signing to Wah Wah 45s, the band released their critically acclaimed sophomore album "Favourite Worry", sold out London's Union Chapel, toured with the Fun Lovin' Criminals and completed a sell-out UK tour climaxing at London's KOKO in Camden town. 

The Milk’s third studio album is scheduled for release in early 2020 – more details TBA.
