After a long hiatus, the Walking and Falling mix series is back. Given the turbulence of the last few months, we needed a necessary recharge & reset. 

After taking (and holding) some space, we are psyched to return with a mix from @sisterzo, one of the founders of Kansas City's @untuckcollective. Sister Zo and her cofounders express their mission through UN/TUCK - to support queer, trans, & femme artists in a deep capacity. 

This mix is our favorite kind: it explores hybrid territories and skillfully transitions between genres, keeping listeners engaged from start to finish by showcasing a vast sonic & emotional range. From bass heavy and afro-percussive spaces to techno & club music, Sister Zo's has offered a mesmerizing, powerful mix, imbued with strength, love and magic.

We are pleased to host a mix by one of our favourite creatives in berlin who mesmerises with a mix that touches every corner with heart and uniqueness .

NM DJ is a recording and printing artist based in Berlin. Her vocal practice developed out of writing and reciting poetry at readings organized by TABLOID Press – a publishing house she co-founded with Zoe Darsee in 2014. She has collaborated as a vocalist with musical artists such as Perila, Special Guest DJ, Soho Rezanejad, and Ulla Straus, and in November 2019 performed a live set with exael on Berlin’s HÖR radio. As a designer, she has produced album graphics for labels including wood//work, Experiences Ltd., Uzuri, and Lillerne Tapes.

@otodojo's work as a producer, DJ, and visual artist always feels like going somewhere, which makes sense, since his moniker is a play on words amounting to "a sound place for learning". And whether traveling through time or space, there's always a hint of magic, an intuitive sense of when to push the listener and when to give them room to breathe or a playful release. Based in Ithaca, NY, otodojo is an affiliate of Microtones and Acid Camp.

"With this mix I wanted to invoke states of awareness I had when listening to sources of inspiration for music while growing up. I picked a few tracks that I wanted to highlight that aided my foray into electronic music - songs that I went to for a variety of emotional conditions. I then explored connections between those moments and searched for ways to combine them with modern energy. Being fully in Ableton for this mix I found myself reworking many parts, particularly the intro, to match ideas / messages I wanted to convey, the main one being to process inhibitions and trauma by means of sound and movement.

The mix takes some unexpected turns and has an air of inherent silliness to it that I think stems from my desire to be and not be taken seriously, simultaneously. It’s loaded with unreleased material - including a pulsing groove from Ali Berger - ‘Soft Drama’, and an ethereal breaks track from Tenkai Kariya - ‘desert5’, both of which are forthcoming on an audio-visual wave~seed compilation supporting indigenous communities in Ecuador.

Through this process I found that I still feel fresh to many concepts in DJing, and am relearning the sheer creative joy that it holds as a medium for self-expression. For example, this was one of the first times that I made edits specific for this mix, and I thank CCL’s mix for Juanita’s for that inspiration. I learned a lot through this experience and I really appreciate Spontaneous Affinity for having me be a part of this. This mix was a healing process for me and I hope it can be for you as well."

trying to write a lil blurb about josh is an unjust task. this person is so many things for so many people in so many ways... truly a renaissance girl, here's someone whose generosity can only be rivalled by their incredible, unmatched sensibility for music old and new - and his patience to track down artists and convince them to release or re-issue their stuff on his label. diggers love to brag, but they impress little when standing next to giant like this: a lover who does it for the sharing, for the stories, to keep the myriad legacies alive and ready to inspire futures. i don't know how on earth and the cosmos i was lucky enough to be introduced to this bb, but i thank the great magicianess every day for this friendship. whenever we get to spend time together everything feels right. like the great tapestry makes more sense and comes full circle. whether we laugh or we cry or (likely) eat, it just reminds me that ugh, yes, despite all the pain and the dire prices to pay, it's worth it to live because of shared moments like this.

of course josh, in true self-depricating genius fashion, said this when delivering this beautiful mix: 'here is my mix. it's only songs from 2020 lol i am a dork'. well, it had to be released today cause we all deserve to have this on our players to help us elevate into a (hopefully shinier) 2021 while being thankful for the silver linings 2020 had - music does save. especially music that comes from a heart like josh's.
