Sweetest Kiss

Tried something different here in many ways - wanted to see how long it would take me to record a track and get it up onto SoundCloud - my songs tend to be big production affairs and usually take many months to produce - this track was recorded over two evenings.

The song is about a small provincial UK seaside town I used to live in that had a typically small provincial UK seaside town cinema, which was struggling to stay afloat.  A bunch of diehard pillars of the local community campaigned hard to keep it open, even rallying support from the local press.  Good Christian men of England, one and all, they came up with all kinds of crazy ideas to convince the cinema owners not to sell up - but when it was discovered that the buyers were actually a local free evangelical church they finally showed their true colours.  Some of the anti-religious posturing was scandalous and the vitriol and hatred displayed in the local press at the time (1990's) would not be tolerated in today's society, especially if the buyers had been a Muslim or a Jewish faith group.

The song highlights the hypocrisy displayed by the protestors who tried to lay the blame of the cinema closing down onto the church group via the press, when in reality it was the people of the town who simply no longer used their local cinema.  I've always respected the writers of protest songs, such as Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, and even Billy Bragg, who wear their hearts on their sleeves when they are passionate about something that needs to be said and done.  It's hardly going to challenge Peter Gabriels' 'Biko' in the world of protest songs (!) but this story moved me enough at the time to write a song about it and it's unlike anything else I've written so far (plus I got to try out my new banjo!).

With war in the desert, death in the hills and earthquakes that level a town.
What makes the headlines in my local news? They’re closing the old picture house down.

Let’s weep for the passing, of yet one more place; Where old jokes and old folks, can’t keep up the pace;
Where profits & sales will always come first, when there’s not enough left to go round
When not enough feet ever walked in off the street, Then they’ll close the old picture house down.

  “Who shall we blame then, for taking the dream?” “Some callous & cold-hearted villain, so it would seem”.
“Let’s print propaganda and fight for our right, this is why we fought the war!”
“With God on our side we must battle with pride!” “They won’t close our old picture house down!”

“Who is the enemy?  What are their names?” “Let’s draw up a strategy, training & military games;
The buyers must know we have faith in our cause and the media is hot on our heels!”
But on the end of the sword are disciples of the Lord! “God is closing our old picture house down?”

You worshipped your film stars every Saturday night, at the ‘Temple’ the money changed hands,
But not enough feet ever walked in off the street, so you’ve closed your own picture house down.
Just who closed the old picture house down?
