I have recently resolved to start sharing my music and art on a regular basis, and as part of that process I am posting this mixtape of various projects I was involved in during 2011. It is interspersed with clips of some silliness laden with many inside jokes. Most of the content in this mix was recorded on a Zoom H4n field recorder. I'm grateful to have collaborated with so many wonderful musicians, and I hope we continue to make wonderful music as time goes on.

Dreams of 1PM

This track is the first modest culmination of a retro music workstation. The two workhorses in the setup are a Macintosh Classic with Cubase 2.5 (an early, sequencer-only Cubase) and a Kurzweil K2500RS, which is like... all 90s music tech crammed into a single box. A gigantic, heavy box. Here it's the bass, the bells, and the samples. And hoo boy do I have a complete new respect for all the 90s sample-based tracks I grew up loving because I never could have imagined how labor intensive and fiddly working with old samplers can be. 

But what I've also learned is there's an incredible benefit to setting your audio up inside of a standalone sampler. Cutting up audio in a DAW is far easier and less frustrating, but there's no spontaneity, and everything has to be really precise. On the other hand, chopping up audio in a sampler and setting up a keymap is super fucking tedious, but the end-result is that you turn the source audio into a new instrument, of sorts. And you don't have to make the chopped up bits match your project tempo exactly, because the little fragments kind of smooth imperfections out. The result is that you can be really creative and spontaneous and quickly try things out and create a new performance from the sample.

I've always loved sample heavy music like Amon Tobin, Soul Coughing, Fatboy Slim. But I've never really explored the genre for myself because I never understood what a difference the sampler itself makes to the process. 

This track makes heavy use of the Amen break, which I'm trying not to sweat because although it's well-trodden, it's also iconic. And it just sounds great. And since I've had the chopped up Amen bits loaded in my Handsonic for a while now, I have a good deal of practice with them. Sometimes I think it would be fun to do live performance that way; accompany a band with Amen slices. The slices aren't broken all the way down to individual hits, and it's a funny sort of feeling playing them, knowing that you only have a few beats before you have to hit another pad and keep the beat going.

In his ted talk, Mark Ronson says that sampling is about the desire to insert yourself into the musical history of something that you found inspiring. I've always been inspired by cartoons, and particularly by Daffy Duck, Bob Clampett, etc. Daffy Duck has a lot of super iconic moments, and I tried to go for like, medium recognizable bits. Things that big time looney tunes fans will recognize but which are not mega mega recognizable, "Duck season!" gets omitted. But the "stomping" from that film gets used.
