Sam Snail Quits The Circus (disquiet0462)

Experiment in slowing tempo. This is  Arturia Pigments, Klevgrand Hillman and Klevgrand Skaka being slowed from 200bpm to 20bpm before fading out completely. The three are processed through AudioThing's Wires and Waveshaper's Echo Cat for some distress and warble. The Skaka track is doubled before passing the original tracks through Eventide's Physion. Then all tracks are passed through Puremagnetik's Pastfabric and finally Eventide's Blackhole.

The God Gradient (disquiet0463)

I chose a minimal to dense, quiet to loud gradient for this. Two instruments — a lapsteel guitar (+memory man delay and eventide space) and a Microfreak synth.  I use gradient theory (ombré and abrash) quite often in two other active elements in my life, rug designing and indigo dyeing. I tried to channel my composition with those in mind, letting unexpected results do what they will, while controlling the palette with a few parameters.

The Assignment: Make a piece of music inspired by the concept of a gradient.

Step 1: Think about how a gradient functions, as one thing transitions into another.

Step 2: Make a short piece of music that aims to explore the idea of a gradient in sound.

For "Making the Gradient" I began with a sample in Morphagene that had a slow logarithmic envelope from Maths modulating Morph--just enough to make it interesting. I brought in a saw wave from Furthrrr Generator's Modulator a little too strong at first to mark a change in texture. Got it under control with a saw wave LFO and this marked my transition. Slowly, a deep waveform from Furthrrr's Carrier final output comes in. It is also being modulated by the same slow logarithmic envelope from Maths, courtesy of an Adventure Audio Mult.

Final out was run through my effects skiff, which got a little changeup. It is now Polymoon>Siren>Big Sky and I like the space that Siren brings.

The inital transition was a little sloppy, but I'm pleased with how this turned out.
