We're pleased to introduce you to our next Islander, Girasol! Host of “Latitudes Lunatiques” on the Parisian web-radio @radio-sofa, and co-founder of @tropicalites (tropicalites.world/).

"It has been wide & moody, from an electronic obsession to a fascination with traditional Latin & Caribbean rhythms. I’m currently finding a path between them and I keep on collecting vinyl, building a diverse world of proto-electronic and tropical-rooted sounds, worshiping black music in the broadest sense of the term, and eclecticism almost as a dogma."

About the mix:
"A base of 80’s (or early 90’s) tropical scene productions, when drumachines & synths were conquering the world: Brazilian electric boogie, SA bubblegum, Congolese UFO, more organic West Indies grooves, etc., blended with some northern hemisphere tracks from the same period, often marked by latin language vocals and always tinged with the period’s very characteristic sounds. Among the genres I played: French synth pop, italo-disco, spanish hip house, and some purely house vibes."

it has long been known, in the musical context, that the relationship between france and brazil has always been of great admiration on both sides. tropicality flows very well in every scenario of the countries and the harmonious exchange has been going on for many years. that's why, for this edition, we took a trip to the city of paris to invite a french friend who has had a bit of carioca in his life.

willy aka @solgira is the host of Latitudes Lunatiques on the parisian web-radio @radio-sofa, and the co-founder of @tropicalites . girasol worships “great black music” in the broadest sense of the term, from traditional carribbean rhythms to 80/90’s electronic sounds. his selections are always turned towards the sun, like the heliotropic plant that hides behind his alias. 

“ while living in Rio a few years ago, i have started to dive into brazil’s 90’s hip hop scene and look for hidden conscious rap records. since then, this genre has never stopped following me, but i had never put a selection together nor recorded a mix. This is his first attempt at doing so. 

this vinyl mix features a strictly 90’s rap selection seasoned with two street soul/downtempo beats to build bridges and bring diversity. given underexposure of women and sexism in the hip hop scene, i have challenged himself and the stereotypes with a strictly 50/50 rule. half of the tracks featured in this mix are by women. "

há muito já é sabido, no contexto musical, que a relação entre frança e brasil sempre foi de muita admiração de ambas partes. a tropicalidade flui muito bem em todo cenário dos países e o intercâmbio harmonioso vem de muitos anos. por isso, para essa edição demos um pulo na cidade de paris para convidar um francês que já teve um tanto de carioca em sua vida. 

willy é mais conhecido pelo seu nome artístico de girasol ( @solgira). host do programa latitudes lunatiques, da web-rádio parisiense radio sofa ( @radio-sofa ), e também cofundador da label tropicalites ( @tropicalites ). Girasol idolatra a black music no amplo sentido de seu termo - dos ritmos caribenhos da década de 1980/90 aos sons eletrônicos originários de raízes negras. sua seleção são sempre voltadas para uma estética solar, como a planta heliotrópica que está por trás de seu pseudônimo.

“ enquanto morei alguns anos no rio, pude mergulhar na cena do hip hop brasileiro dos anos 90 e comecei a buscar por tracks escondidas que apresentassem uma consciência por trás. desde então, nunca mais parei de seguir esse gênero, no entanto nunca havia colocado tudo junto em um set gravado, essa é minha primeira vez. 

esse mix de vinil é estritamente feito de seleções de rap dos anos 90, com alguns street souls e downtempo beats para criar a ponte entre as tracks e trazer diversidade ao set. dada a falta de mulheres no cenário do hip hop e também ao sexismo que ofusca seus trabalhos me desafiei e também desafiei aos esteriótipos com uma regra de 50/50. metade das tracks apresentadas em todo o set são feitas por mulheres.”
