Things Are Falling Apart

Happy Spring and welcome back to campus! In the early 1960s, film composer Ennio Morricone worked as a staff arranger at RCA Italiana's pop music division, recording hundreds of songs with the top vocal artists of the day. Typewriter overdubs, deafening choirs, and song structures inspired by ambulance sirens all took pop music into weird places it had never gone before. The core of this sound was the stellar orchestra assembled for his film scores: Edda Dell'orso and the Cantori Moderni choir, and the guitar sound of Alessandro Alessandroni. This semester, Watzek Spins takes a deep dive into this largely forgotten archive of ephemeral Italian pop recordings. Digitized and curated by Center for Cassette Studies from original vinyl.
