Figured it's a good time to re-up this tape from six years ago. I've been hesitant to do so since there's five million J. Dilla tribute tapes out there, but...whatever. Maybe you all will dig this one too! Here are the notes from the original release:

"I really dug Dilla, his choice of records, his lush filtered samples, his basslines, and the fact he loved to eat donuts. I was introduced to his genius by Jumbo of the Lifesavas. He hit me with a dub of the early Slum Village album before it dropped, and told me to dub it and give it back to him the next day, cuz that was his only copy. And even rocking a dub of a dub, the beats were just so ill. I’d bump the shit til I couldn’t take the rhmyes anymore, but I never got tired of the beats.

I’d wanted to do this tape for awhile, and felt I should put something together dedicated to Dilla, as I was a fan of his music. Not every beat or 12 inch, but the feel of his production – he just had a great ear for great records. This tape is a mixture of some of my favorite Dilla-related records (that I own on wax) from well-known to more obscure, from rock to classic hip-hop tracks. It is by no means any kind of compendium, and isn’t meant to be. It’s just a brief sampling of music I dig, music that represents the inspiration I took from Jay Dee."

Last month saw the 25th anniversary of Daily Operation, the third LP of one of hip-hop’s most revered and beloved duos: Gang Starr. Released May 5, 1992, the album features classic joints such as “Take It Personal” and “Ex-Girl to Next Girl.”

One of my favorite MC's of all time is Mos Def. The man was so damn fluid on the mic and actually cared about the things he talked about. A true poet. Growing up, it was very important for me to see people who were actually intelligent while still retaining that cool factor. I think many times in the black community, you equate a person being extremely well-read as either snobby and elitist or a straight sell-out with no self-awareness. Mos was able to shatter those misconceptions beautifully. The man is an award-winning actor, true mc, poet, and producer. And he does all of them with skill and a nobility. Up North Trips presents 94 State of Mind (A Mix by Its Overture)

I am constantly thinking of different themes to build a mix around. With the completion of each mix I typically fall into a 2-3 week funk where I try to think of a new theme for my next mix. Following the Folger's Blends mix I was struggling to think of a new theme. Then, one day while doing a random google search I stumbled onto the above logo. At first glance, I thought the logo was straight dope. However, the logo became even cooler when I learned that it was the creation of my favorite t-shirt designer, Derek from Manifest Worldwide. Given that the saying behind the logo comes from a ATCQ song, I was originally intending to do a Tribe mix. However, since Tribe mixes are a dime a dozen I went in the direction of creating a mix that attempts to capture the jazzy vibe that groups like Tribe and Digable Planets spawned. As the title suggests, all songs on this mix incorporate jazz based samples. The track selection includes music from jazzy groups and producers such as A Tribe Called Quest, Digable Planets, Diamond D, Black Moon, De La Soul, Madlib, No ID, Gang Starr, Showbiz & AG, Big L, The Roots, and Nas (I think that's all of them?). Half the fun of making this mix was doing the research to ensure that all songs maintained a jazz break. Some were no brainers, but other songs with jazz breaks were quite surprising. Jazz based samples have always given a special vibe to hip hop music so I hope this mix captures that magic. Thanks again to Derek at Manifest for inspiring the mix's theme.
