In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Part 2 of this first edition in the series documents Hip Hop’s progression through the years 1984 to 1987, an era in which the dominant sound of Hip Hop changed drastically with the increasing popularity of drum machine programmed beats and early sampling technology. This mix leans quite heavily toward sample based material from the latter part of that era.

Questlove - The Lesson Mix

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Edition #3 of this mixtape series pays tribute to the Hip Hop of 1989, another year in which the genre’s dominant sounds changed drastically. As the James Brown influenced sound that had dominated the late 80s played out its final days, a new wave of acts including De La Soul burst on to the scene injecting a light hearted honesty into their lyrical content which paved the way for the emerging ‘new school’ sound of the early 90s. Early releases from the likes of X Clan hinted at the ‘afrocentric’ sound that would come to prominence in the following years. Artwork pays homage to classic late 80s imprint 'Cold Chillin'.

After spending hours in my own crates due to this forthcoming sale, I got inspired, hopped on the decks and rocked a live 90 minute mix of soul, funk, library, jazz, disco, hip-hop, etc. There's joints and genres from all around the world. I went hard (pause) on the doubles at some points, and there's some instrumental/acapella blends up there too… 

This was an spur of the moment practice session that was never to be given to the public, just to listen to later for ideas… no playlists, no preparation… A few mates enjoyed it whom I sent it to and prompted me to get it out there… Please excuse all the sloppy mixes, cuts, etc. I wanted to keep it raw like the mixes of the 90's… feedback is appreciated.

Alongside the Hip Hop series, this companion Breaks series takes our re-cap of Rap History a level deeper, this time reconstructing the classics of the Hip Hop canon from their constituent sample material. Arranged chronologically of course, this sixth volume pieces together popular Hip Hop tunes from the year of 1991, utilising only the Funk, Soul, Rock, Jazz and Disco tracks from which they were originally constructed - over 100 breaks in the mix! Artwork pays homage to Paul Winley's iconic 'Super Disco Brakes' compilation series.

#HIPHOP50: Classic Material The Breaks #6 (1991) mixed by Chris Read

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Edition #9 in this year by year series pays tribute to the Hip Hop of 1995, a year which arguably typifies what is often referred to as the ‘mid 90s sound’, with filtered and layered grooves accompanying crisp programmed drums at a tempo generally far lower than in previous years. The general trend for decreasing tempos peaked in ’95 with a significant proportion of single releases barely breaking the 90bpm mark. 1995 is also notable for the rise of a darker more melancholy production style with even the darkest of backdrops (Mobb Deep’s Shook Ones Part 2 being a good example) scoring as unlikely club hits. Artwork pays tribute to heavy hitting 90s imprint Loud Records.

I SMILE LA MIXTAPE - OG SLICK x RHETTMATIC

Basically, I'm a child of 90's hip-hop. I always have been and always will be. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of dope hip-hop on the market today (mainstream and underground), but to me, the eight-year period spanning from 1990 - 1998 was a hip-hop Renaissance that will probably never be duplicated. And DJ Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Garcia (AKA Cool Bob Love, AKA DJ Cucumber Slice, AKA the ten thousand other nicknames this dude has) were probably two of the most influential people in the game at that time. I'm not gonna go into a long history regarding their show on WKCR, but from 1990 - 1998, during the hours of 1-5 AM every Thursday night / Friday morning, these two, for lack of a better term, "smashed the airwaves" of the New York metropolitan area. Their show was responsible for launching the careers of Nas, Mobb Deep, Big L, Jay-Z, Big Pun, Fat Joe, The Notorious B.I.G., A Tribe Called Quest, The Beatnuts, Black Moon, Redman, The Wu-Tang Clan, and the list goes on and on. Since I was too young during the show's heyday, I've had to feed my addiction for this show by scouring the internets for uploaded tapes from listeners from back in the day. What I did with this mix was try to showcase some of the joints that were spun on their show beginning in 1990 and ending in 1998. I compiled all the tracks to make it seem like you're listening to an actual taping of the show. All of these tracks were played on WKCR at least once (some more than others). I even threw in some of my favorite freestyles and exclusives, which were taken directly from old cassettes. I've got a ton of these old recordings, and it was really difficult to decide what to include/exclude, but hopefully, you'll get a sense of their legendary show and the evolution of classic hip-hop over a legendary eight-year period. Also, shout out to the good peoples at <a href="http://Philaflava.org" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Philaflava.org</a> for supplying me and the rest of the Stretch &amp; Bob fiends with hundreds of old tapes.
