In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Edition #1 documents Hip Hop’s birth on wax and its formative years, 1979-1983, from the disco and boogie influenced sound of the late 70s through to the drum machine led tracks of the early 80s.

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Alongside the Hip Hop series, this companion Breaks series takes our re-cap of Rap History a level deeper, this time reconstructing the classics of the Hip Hop canon from their constituent sample material. Arranged chronologically of course, this sixth volume pieces together popular Hip Hop tunes from the year of 1991, utilising only the Funk, Soul, Rock, Jazz and Disco tracks from which they were originally constructed - over 100 breaks in the mix! Tribute mix celebrating Pete Rock & CL Smooth's masterpiece 'The Main Ingredient', which turned 30 recently.
'Mecca & The Soul Brother' is the more iconic/important album, but Main Ingredient slowly became my favorite over the years.....for a lot of the same reasons I lean to ATCQ's Midnight Marauders over Low End Theory.
Pete's production went from a harder/dusty sound on MATSB, to a warm/melodic vibe on TMI.  The samples Pete chose hit your soul in that sweet spot:  from Cannonball Adderley on 'In The House', to George Benson on 'I Get Physical' + 'In The Flesh', to Roy Ayers on 'Searching'....masterful.  Pair that with CL's smooth voice & flow, and your soul starts to vibrate....

This month marks the 25th anniversary of Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth's second (and final) full-length LP, 'The Main Ingredient.' Following in the footsteps of 1992's 'Mecca and the Soul Brother,' the album comprises tracks built from densely layered samples, frequently previously unsampled jazz fusion cuts mixed with crisp drums and short vocal snippets plundered from well-known '80s/'90s hip-hop tracks. Use of a number of go-to tracks defines the sound of the album and the presence of vocal samples from Biz Markie and Big Daddy Kane in particular is a key ingredient in the album's sonic palette. In celebration of the album's 25th year, we've partnered once again with WhoSampled to present this mixtape of album tracks, alt versions, interview snippets, and of course original sample material, mixed by Chris Read.
