In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Alongside the Hip Hop series this companion Breaks series takes our re-cap of Rap History a level deeper, this time reconstructing the classics of the Hip Hop canon from their constituent sample material. Arranged chronologically of course, this fifth volume pieces together popular Hip Hop tunes from the year of 1990, utilising only the Funk, Soul and Disco tracks from which they were originally constructed. Artwork pays homage to Paul Winley's iconic 'Super Disco Brakes' compilation series.

Welcome to the first instalment of this season's mixes titled SPRING BREAKZ!

It's been over a month since I've been in the lab and it took me a little while to get warmed up this evening, so bear with this as  it's my most ambitious effort yet. As the weather starts to heat up, I thought I should get that heat out the crates too! Here's a list of the genres and things that I managed to lock down in 73 minutes of the wheels of steel:

Disco, Funk, Soul, Soundtracks, Reggae, Library Records, Dirty Funky Soul 45s, $1 Bin Classics, Drum Breaks, a * TONNE * of used and unused samples, Private Press secret squirrels, Experimental/Electronic stuff, Blaxploitation radio spots, Chinese TV commercials, Australian Punk, Psych, Fuzz, Jazz, Latin, Video Game music, Stereo Test records, Pinky Violence raers, B-Boy Breaks, an Idris Muhamad (R.I.P.) "extraction" from my man BAPT in Paris, a couple of seldom played Nas joints, a Lakim Shabazz freestyle, some live remix action with Rakim, Fat Joe, 50 Cent, The Game, Alkaholiks and Percee P all gettin' the live "SHEEPMIX" treatment (check around the 34 minute mark). As always, I gave this mix the world treatment with special joints from India, Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, Taiwan, Africa, Israel, South America, Thailand, China, Italy, Russia, Hungary and from all over Europe and the world. David Axelrod sits nicely besides James Last on this mix… Finally, J-Zone laced me with his new "Lunch Breaks" record, so I cut up a handful of those breaks throughout the mix; see if you can tell his drums from the 70's joints, it's tough!

Thanks to everyone who supported the "Winter Bluntz" trilogy, This mix was definitely a test of stamina on the brain and on the decks, please enjoy and all I ask in return is to please keep spreading the good word throughout your networks and holla if you got anything good cookin'; I work and I travel.

Spring Breakz: Episode I

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. This sixth bonus mix focuses on another sub-genre popularised in the 90s which is not entirely easy to define. Loops of popular Hip Hop records arranged into club-friendly instrumentals, in their day these tracks were mostly referred to simply as ‘Breakbeats'. They were Club records first and foremost so ‘Hip Hop Club Breaks’ is maybe a more accurate description. Armand Van Helden’s ‘AV8’ is the label most commonly associated with the sound, although Nervous Records & its ‘Strapped’ sub label were perhaps equally active. A few other smaller labels like Slammin’ and Kingsize also played their part. A lot of DJs principally associated with House music or who produced both House and Hip Hop were responsible for many of these records, often under aliases – Armand Van Helden of course, but also Todd Terry, Kenny Dope, DJ Spinna and others. Many other names in the scene were known for making this style of Hip Hop almost exclusively – Crooklyn Clan, Davey Dex, Bobby J to name a few. Artwork here pays tribute to Armand Van Helden's AV8 Records.

#HIPHOP50: Classic Material The Breaks #10 (1995) mixed by Chris Read

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Edition #10 in this year by year series pays tribute to the Hip Hop of 1996, a year which marks a turning point for the genre with a divide growing between the emerging crossover sound and the underground ‘independent’ sound blossoming in reaction to it. Whilst many established artists including De La Soul and The Roots critiqued the commercial sound of the day, artists such as Busta Rhymes managed to deliver more chart friendly offerings while retainign underground credibility. Notable album releases include the Fugees’ hit album ‘The Score’, Tribe Called Quest’s Ummah produced 4th album, ‘Beats Rhymes and Life’, Jay Z’s ‘Reasonable Doubt’ and Jeru’s ‘Wrath of the Math’ in contrast to it. Debut releases from Kool Keith alias Dr Octagon and newcomers Company Flow set the tone for a new breed of leftfield acts. Artwork references the logo of NY imprint Uptown Records.

Basically, I'm a child of 90's hip-hop. I always have been and always will be. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of dope hip-hop on the market today (mainstream and underground), but to me, the eight-year period spanning from 1990 - 1998 was a hip-hop Renaissance that will probably never be duplicated. And DJ Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Garcia (AKA Cool Bob Love, AKA DJ Cucumber Slice, AKA the ten thousand other nicknames this dude has) were probably two of the most influential people in the game at that time. I'm not gonna go into a long history regarding their show on WKCR, but from 1990 - 1998, during the hours of 1-5 AM every Thursday night / Friday morning, these two, for lack of a better term, "smashed the airwaves" of the New York metropolitan area. Their show was responsible for launching the careers of Nas, Mobb Deep, Big L, Jay-Z, Big Pun, Fat Joe, The Notorious B.I.G., A Tribe Called Quest, The Beatnuts, Black Moon, Redman, The Wu-Tang Clan, and the list goes on and on. Since I was too young during the show's heyday, I've had to feed my addiction for this show by scouring the internets for uploaded tapes from listeners from back in the day. What I did with this mix was try to showcase some of the joints that were spun on their show beginning in 1990 and ending in 1998. I compiled all the tracks to make it seem like you're listening to an actual taping of the show. All of these tracks were played on WKCR at least once (some more than others). I even threw in some of my favorite freestyles and exclusives, which were taken directly from old cassettes. I've got a ton of these old recordings, and it was really difficult to decide what to include/exclude, but hopefully, you'll get a sense of their legendary show and the evolution of classic hip-hop over a legendary eight-year period. During our 30+ year history we have become well-known for championing a wide-range of musical genres, but for many people we will forever be associated with the golden age of hip hop and our Soho stores. The memories of the music and culture from that time are intertwined with the experience of being in that store (for customers and staff alike). Mr Bongo founder and MD, Dave Buttle, recalls that heady period in Mr Bongo history…

"It was a really exciting time. Soho was booming - full of media companies, record, stores, labels, and the place to go in London for your vinyl shopping needs. If you had an exclusive new hip hop release in store the word would spread and it would be a roadblock. We are talking the early Rawkus releases, Mos Def, Company Flow, then we had Dr Octagon, exclusive Lord Finesse bits from Japan."

Hip hop will always be in the DNA of Mr Bongo and a couple of years back we decided to channel that into a Mr Bongo Hip Hop 45 reissue series. Our ambition was to release the best and most in demand cuts from the 80’s and 90’s on 7" in original picture sleeves. It’s a collection of our personal favourites, Bongo store anthems and undeniable classics. We kicked the series off with A Tribe Called Quest ‘Scenario’ and we are about to hit release number 20 with the Egyptian Lover ‘Computer Love'. The series has featured artists such as Nas, Souls of Mischief, Ultramagnetic MC’s, Cypress Hill, Gang Starr, Black Sheep - to name a few. The response to these releases has been fantastic - the demand for these cuts is coming in from all around the world and we are very thankful for the support and love they are getting!

To celebrate reaching release number 20 in the series we thought now would be a good time to showcase the catalogue in full. We called in DJ Chris Read to put together an exclusive Mr Bongo Hip Hop 45’s mix. Chris is a long-time collaborator with Bongo, has a deep knowledge of hip hop, and is an incredible DJ. Perfect for this mix. 

"Every track featured in the Bongos Hip Hop 45s reissues series is a certified classic and a high proportion of these records featured heavily in my DJ sets during the 90s and beyond. It was a lot of fun not only to see these records again on 45, but also to revisit them in this mix. 

In the years after I moved back to London in the early 2000s, a record shopping trip to Soho was a regular part of my Saturday routine and a visit to Mr Bongo's Berwick Street store was an essential stop on a circuit that took in stores including Record and Tape Exchange, Major Flavas, Scenario, Deal Real and many others. The space was small, the queue for the counter usually deep and the vibe was often hectic, but the atmosphere was electric. I have no idea how many hours I must have spent flicking through the racks or stood at the counter trying to get a glimpse of the latest arrivals up on the wall, but they were hours well spent, made all the better by the presence of some top class DJs serving from behind the counter.” Chris Read
