Renowned producer and DJ Ranjit Nijjer brings his two decades of experience in the underground techno scene to the forefront with his latest contribution to the Machine Mix series, Featuring a selection of deep, hypnotic jacking grooves intertwined with his special brand of funk, Nijjer's mix promises to captivate listeners with his distinctive sound.

Having been an integral part of Melbourne's techno landscape for nearly twenty years, Nijjer has left an indelible mark on the city's underground music scene. From his role as the mastermind behind the iconic club night Technoir to his regular appearances at revered techno institutions such as Machine and Melbourne Techno Collective, Nijjer's influence resonates throughout the city.

In recent years, Nijjer has solidified his position as a prolific producer, delivering seven EPs on Machine. His relentless dedication to crafting intricate soundscapes and hypnotic rhythms has garnered him widespread acclaim, both locally and internationally.

Hypnobombia is a Helsinki based, techno-centric ensemble formed by Valo Elios   and Jaakko Huotari, whose focus is on love for techno music. Since their founding in 2016, the duo has channeled their 20+ years of techno experience into crafting a unique sound that marries the intensity of night-time techno with lighter, more ethereal elements. Their music is known for its rich layers of darkness, humidity, and relentless groove.

Their tracks are distinguished by small, crunchy details that create a sense of suspense, evoking the sensation of thin ice cracking during a storm. They build subliminal, almost scientific atmospheres with a perfectly swinging groove, while their rolling drums—lift the beat as if it were airborne. Hypnobombia’s approach reflects a commitment to modern, subliminally charged deep techno, blending timeless elements with a fresh, trend-resistant production style.

It was anarchy and ichonomachy†; we came, we revelled, we razed those orthodox beliefs and outmoded institutions to the ground (which could be seen as a preventative in these incendiary times :’o). A blissful and brilliant reminder of the power and freedom in not just choosing your own adventure but building it from the ground up (which will become increasingly vital, I suspect) whilst sharing the whole endeavour with a whole lotta other marvellous, motivated, mahtava‡ and magical maniacs. 

I was in a right state when it came time to play; for no appreciable reason that I can adequately account for, I was forty-five minutes late in starting and, when I did get going, was sucked immediately into a musical wormhole that made moot my offer to cut my set short to make up lost time - apologies, fellow DJs ;P There are a couple of hiccups, but if that’s the worst of it, then things went rather brilliantly! Hope you enjoy, as you embark upon this future that is upon us - 2020, look out! :D xoxo

With over a 12 years experience of playing a chief role in Melbourne’s underground techno scene, Ranjit Nijjer can lay claim to contributing to a few special moments in it’s history.

Since the early noughties, Ranjit has remained a devotee to techno and electronic music. Now immersing himself in various areas of the techno scene, Ranjit has been able to formulate his own sound, drawing from different influences. Using a four-channel digital set-up, Ranjit combines loops, effects, field recordings, samples and complete pieces of music to connect with the dancefloor to give them the best possible experience. “. I guess my basic philosophy of DJing, if I have one, is to present good music in the best possible way. So if that means playing a track by itself for 6 minutes or playing three tracks at once in a particular configuration will yield the best result for the audience, then that’s what I’ll do. As the years have gone on I’ve tried to become less fixed in the way I do things and have really focused on being as fluid and adaptive as possible,” he says.

Ranjit’s contribution to the scene spans beyond DJing, as one of the founders of Technoir, which has been running for 14 years and stands as one of Melbourne’s longest running underground techno nights. Aside from Technoir, Ranjit is a regular guest at many clubs and events around town as well as performing at one of Australia’s premier music festivals, Rainbow Serpent Festival. In terms of other institutional involvements, Ranjit is also a member of When The Smoke Clears and has been working with the collective for the past four years in order to host internationals like Audio Injection/Truncate, Perc, Tommy Four Seven and Chris Liebing, as well as nights in promotion of local talent.

With nearly fifteen years involvement in Melbourne’s underground techno scene, Ranjit can lay claim to contributing to a few special moments in its history. Best known to many as the man behind iconic club night Technoir, Ranjit is also a regular at other Melbourne Techno insitutions including Machine and Melbourne Techno Collective. 

Not only is he a gentleman and a scholar, Ranjit is also a deeply considered sound theorist. With the ultimate precision, he gets inside the music and somehow unpacks it; you can hear this in his mix as a DJ and in his production as an artist.

SIMON SLIEKER  :: 7 quick lockdown questions  

1. Action, Drama, Romance or Documentary movie? 

Whichever one has a sweeping epic hero. Unfortunately this means I have dubious taste in cinema, lacking nuance, eschewing complexity, and constantly craving something to believe in. I’m increasingly disappointed. 

2. Coffee, Tea or Alcohol? 

At the moment tea. That’s the morning ritual. But I don’t really like tea, it’s too watery and insipid. But coffee is brutal, so I like to roll off it periodically. Hence the tea. As for alcohol, if you’d asked me last lockdown, it was all about Damned Murphy and his crazy specials, hmmm a spirit, all the fun of the mixed case of wine, may well get this six pack as well, oh and these ciders, and on the way out that shopping trolley with random bottles was so much fun; wow $1.39 for a bottle of citrus stout: bargain! Bleaugh. This time I’ve stopped altogether. Dry. So the tea has become quite the ‘high’. High tea. 

3. Sleep in or get up early 

Ah this is becoming about the contrasting lockdowns: 1 and 2. Lockdown 1 I didn’t sleep, I stayed up the whole time. Lockdown 2 I’m going to bed early and have made a surprise discovery: getting up early. Which sounds bad, like you’re being punished. But it turns out it means you’re getting enough sleep. I’ve not experienced this before so it didn’t make any sense. It’s amazing you should try it. 

4. Favourite Sunday afternoon listening album 

I don’t have one.

5. What art movement describes you the best?

Pre-Raphaelite.

6 Opera, Country, Folk or Black Death Metal

Maybe folk. But I think you’ve chosen the four exceptionally problematic and compromised genres there. Were they chosen especially for me? I’m going with folk because when I was 16 I decided to become quite good with a harmonica and I think that had something to do with folk, or Bob Dylan at least. 

7. Tell us something no one knows about you?

I don’t have a favourite listening album. Oh that cat’s out of the bag. Um, I don’t want to alarm anyone, but I think I’m starting to go bald.
