Haley Bonar is set to release her 5th full length record, Last War, on May 20th via Graveface Records. Bonar takes a darker sonic direction on the forthcoming album which envelopes her omnipotent songwriting in lush, brooding soundscapes that feature hard driving rhythm sections, soaring synths and snarling guitars. The record was recorded at Devils Workshop, April Base and 606 (Dave Grohl's personal studio in LA) The cherry on top: special guest Justin Vernon (Bon Iver, Volcano Choir) appears on two tracks adding his ethereal vocal harmonies to "From A Cage" and "Eat for Free".

Haley Bonar was discovered during an open mic event by one of her musical heroes, Alan Sparhawk of Low. The next day she quit school, crammed her Honda Civic full of gear with her drummer, and was opening for Low across the country she had barely seen. Haley was twenty years old. Since then, she has released four full length albums, several EPs, started a punk/new-wave side project (Gramma’s Boyfriend), had songs tapped for major motion pictures and has had the pleasure to tour from coast-to-coast playing some of the most amazing venues with some of the most talented artists in the world.

Henry's Dress were that rare band for us - a group that we discovered through a demo tape, and then only through the Linton's heroic perseverance in getting a very busy Papa Slumber to listen. Boy, are we glad we finally listened! This EP documents the band's middle period, branching out from their initial interests in Loop-meets-MBV pop heaviness into the more mod/punk sounds that would fuel their later efforts. It's a superb, varied record well worthy of your further investigation.

Anyway you slice it, this record is a smash. Hard-hitting tracks like "Radio One" and "Feathers" are the Dress at their punkiest best. Linton's "A Is For Cribbage" is the Dress at their most mod, coming on like an early Who on a handful of purple hearts - it's possibly our favorite Dress tune! And then of course there's "Sally Wants" and "Three" - a couple of blissed-out fuzzed-out downtempo tracks that beat the space-rockers to the punch by a few solid years.

The band would go even further down the mod/punk route with their subsequent album "Bust 'em Green," but this EP represents a raw, immediate document of a band finding their footing and their own unique sound. And best of all - it still sounds freaking great.

Dweller On The Threshold

Severed Heads are one of the longest surviving bands to emerge from the Australian post-punk independent music scene. They began in Sydney in 1979, incorporating elements of 'industrial' noise-generation, tape cutting & looping and electronic sound synthesis. As the project developed song-structures and vocals were employed in a more-or-less recognizable mutant electro pop style. After many line-up changes featuring Gary Bradbury and psychedelic guitarist Simon Knuckey, Severed Heads was the vehicle for composer Tom Ellard. 
By 1983 they released a C-60 cassette called “Since The Accident” that grabbed the attention of Ink Records, a subsidiary of Virgin in the UK.  Ellard added a throwaway track at the last minute to fill out the cassette, not wanting to leave an unseemly gap on a C60 tape. This track, “Dead Eyes Opened” was catchy enough to get a lot of airplay on the main non-commercial radio station in Sydney. The band was asked to make this song into a 12” single. For this extended version, Tom Ellard and producer Patrick Gibson went to M Squared studio and passed the multitrack through various EQ and delays. “Dead Eyes Opened” features lyrics from a radio program narrated by Edgar Lustgarten, a crime journalist from England. They reference an actual double murder case that occurred in 1924 calling to mind the gruesome imagery of Hannibal Lecter. The rhythms are made by a TR-808 drum machine and an SH-1 synthesizer. A KORG PolySix did the rising wafty sound and strings. The load solo was a Casiotone run through an Octaver foot pedal. On the B-side are two solo compositions “Bullet” and “Mount” that Ellard recorded at Terse Tapes in 1982. 
All songs are remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Housed in the original jacket featuring the iconic photograph of a girl with a painted face wrapped in some cloth by Juilee Pryor. Each copy includes a fold-out newsprint poster with a large photo of the band wearing Art Unit skull shirts on one side and liner notes and press clippings on the other. 30 years later Severed Heads are still paving the way for powerful imaginative challenging music far and wide. 

01 Dead Eyes Opened

Xymox was founded in Nijmegen, a city in the east of the Netherlands in 1983 by Ronny Moorings (Vocals, Guitars, Synthesizers) and Anka Wolbert (Vocals, Bass). Ronny saved up his money to buy a TEAC 144 four-track tape recorder and the duo moved to Amsterdam in April 1983. They began to record songs utilizing a Yamaha CS-15, Korg MS-10 and MS-20, a BOSS Dr. Rhythm DR-550, guitar and effects pedals. All of the recording were made pre-computers. They layered the drone-like tones of monophonic synthesizers alongside tape loops and rhythm tracks, then played guitar and bass. The 5-song EP “Subsequent Pleasures" was released in 1984 and limited to 500 vinyl copies. A precursor to the dark wave sounds they would champion on their self-titled 4AD Record debut the following year. One song from the EP, “Muscoviet Musquito”, was later re-recorded for the compilation album “Lonely Is An Eyesore” released by 4AD in 1987. Since Anka was designing silk-screened posters for a music venue called Oktopus, the band had access to the facilities. Anka based the sleeve design on a drawing she had done of Ronny lying in the grass that summer and used some cutouts and details of other photos.
All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. All jackets have been silk-screened with pink and grey paint, using the original plates Anka created in 1984. Each copy includes a fold-out pink newsprint poster with never before seen photos of the band, lyrics and liner notes by Anka and Ronny. See the colors and waves in this deluxe 30th anniversary edition of a classic piece of Dutch history, highly sought after by collectors.

03 Strange 9 To 9

Sometime about a million tears ago (well, 20 years ago anyway), there was a thing called "love rock." Championing a youthful and naive approach to music, love rock bands like Beat Happening and Love Child created a sound that was both joyous and dark, celebrating the trials and challenges of adolescence. Sleepyhead was at the forefront, a skilled and thrilling band that was equal parts punk and pop, and not afraid to rock out in full-on Dinosaur Jr. mode to make its point.

"Punk Rock City USA" was their first album, a breathless rush of enthusiasm and quality song-writing that that jettisoned musical perfection for a type of emotional power not often heard in indie-pop anymore. Full of squalling guitars and tumbling drums, the songs on Punk Rock City USA take on the complications of young adulthood with verve and truthfulness. While the tunes rock hard, they are still tunes and will leave you humming the indelible melodies as you jump around the bedroom, yelling along, getting sweaty and reveling in teenage energy and angst.
