Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen release exclusive 12” for Record Store Day 2015 featuring remixes by Dauwd and Lubomyr Melnyk

After releasing their debut album of unique Nordic electronic sounds in late 2014, Kiasmos – made up of Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen – return with a special 3-track EP featuring album highlight ‘Looped’ and remixes of album tracks ‘Held’ and ‘Burnt’.

Made in Ólafur’s newly build studio in Reykjavík, Iceland, the title track ‘Looped’ was recorded using acoustic instruments next to a variety of synthesizers, drum machines and tape delays. It also features Ólafur performing on the grand piano, producing an ambient, textured sound, which makes it a perfect home listen and equally danceable tune.

UK electronic producer Dauwd (Kompakt/Ghostly), who Kiasmos specially selected to perform at their sold out London album release show as well as remix their track, has crafted a chilled club version of ‘Held’. Whilst Ukrainian pianist and fellow Erased Tapes artist Lubomyr Melnyk has created a unique re-interpretation of ‘Burnt’ in his signature “Continuous Music” mode, performed on two pianos.

 “It was an honour to be asked to remix an artist for Erased Tapes. Both the label and the artists I admire. And it was such a pleasure to work with the source material from Kiasmos. The parts had so much texture and warmth that working with them in my own space was quite inspiring.  I tried to respond impulsively to the parts and allow anything to happen. I think I achieved something with a balance of the original vibe and looking in another direction.” – Dauwd

Long-term Erased Tapes graphics collaborator Torsten Posselt at Feld Studios in Berlin created the cover artwork for the Looped EP, connecting it with both the album and the Thrown EP.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:		

Kiasmos is made up of Icelandic BAFTA-winning composer Ólafur Arnalds, known for his unique blend of minimal piano and string compositions with electronic sounds, and Janus Rasmussen from the Faroe Islands, known as the mastermind of the electro-pop outfit Bloodgroup. Based in Reykjavík, Arnalds used to work as a sound engineer, often for Rasmussen's other projects, where the two musicians discovered their common love for minimal, experimental music.

With Dysnomia, the Brooklyn-based group Dawn of Midi made up of double bass player Aakaash Israni, pianist Amino Belyamani and drummer Qasim Naqvi abandon improvisation in favour of composition, utilising sophisticated rhythmic structures from North and West African folk traditions to weave a sonic tapestry of trance-inducing grooves. From close up one may see only dots, but when stepping back an undulating image reveals itself. “We didn’t want to create anything cerebral,” says Belyamani, “we wanted something visceral, something that would awaken our instinctive dance impulses.” 

“We wanted to make a record that sounded both musically futuristic and sonically vintage,” explains Israni, “and since the album never saw a proper international release, it is very exciting to see what might happen when more people are exposed to it. And to be aligned with Erased Tapes, whose enthusiasm for the music they release has done a lot for exposing unique instrumental and electronic music, makes it that much more interesting.”

Agnosia project began four years ago, they been influenced by different sound styles, from 90’s Shoegaze till contemporary Ambient and Techno.

Looking for a melancholic sound, they swim into distortioned melodies, mixing progressive and quiet grooves, swallowing you to a metaphorical trip inside the mind of the main character of the story in every release, using the thoughts as the principal way of expression.

The link between music and artworks to their ephemeral manoeuvres, is the principal feature reflected on the label, practicing a musical language through walls of sound and the personal feelings of Agnosia.

In every release, Ephemeral Manoeuvres, will count with a new artist who can change the script to make a new variation for the end of the story. In “Anatomy of Melancholia”, Ness joins the record, creating a daydreamed way of escape for the main character of the story, who’s trapped in his own mind exploration about the loss of a beloved person.

Natch Elements debut with Drone Capacity Ep by the uprising deep techno talent BLNDR. The french producer delivers 4 cuts delineating the primary label's aesthetics, additionally twisted up and remixed by label boss Synthek and compatriot Hydrangea. The record's intro is the ethereal Temples and Mothership, welcoming the listener to a sonic journey which takes the first beat/steps with Wandering Soul. This second cut is made out of fragmented drums alternating a solid kick and delayed vocals. Closing the first side, we find the powerful Drone Capacity, track which gives the title to the release, setting the pace higher and bringing a significant amount of energy in the game. On the flipside, the mystical groove of Silent Quest reveals some deep jungle's secrets and leaves the closing duties to razor-sharp Synthek remix of Drone Capacity which reworks the original elements adding heavy pressure and dancefloor vibes. Left out of the vinyl length the beautiful atmospheric rework of the evergrowing Hydrangea, drawing an alternative, more spacious and organic vision of SIlent Quest. This last cut will be available for free download in the same time of the physical release. NTCEL01 sow the seeds of a new catalogue that supports artists with certain attention for deep and detailed compositions.

YYYY have already fortified their position in the Weekend Circuit family with the ominous drones of ‘Locus Of Control’, their split release with Stanislav Tolkachev earlier in the year. Returning with an inscrutable depth of self-explorative techno, the labels 14th release ‘Intention Of Mortal' is a sonic dissonance of combined heavy-going and captivating artistry.

'Stone Relief On God's Face' is the plangent tone YYYY have chosen to begin their narrative. Formed from tribal, religious and industrial undertones, this beat-free immersive environment of sound brings with it a warm introduction.

A2 sees ‘Regain' quickly permeate the release to a passage of expansive and clear cut techno while continuing a dark intrigue. The standout bass and rolling kicks make it an undeniably compelling and dance hard track, harnessed by its own evolving soundscapes.

'Intention of Mortal' with its improvised hook, merges 90s space voyager highs, echoed melody and fragmented rhythm in to an ever impending trip to the horizon of happy imminence. Thought provoking and full of stimulant, B1 brings a flood to the senses.

Saving the most dizzying until last, 'Reach For Forgiveness' is a harmonic war-machine of disjointed, pulverising electronic music capable moving the unnerved. A cross of lurching percussion makes the steady reps of the kick warped and emotive.

Expressive and unapologetic, YYYY have come back with an unneutralised description of what techno means to them.

Keeping up their fine schedule, the Spazio Disponibile label is back with a fifth excellent EP, this time from Modes. Modes is an artist who is making his debut here, and he is one of a few guys Spazio is creating a platform for in the coming months. 

Modes fits right in with the deeply subliminal, transcendental style of the label and its associated party in Rome. Opener ‘M52’ is a supple and sci-fi mix of smooth rubber kicks and Millsian melodies that are trippy and hypnotic. ‘M51’ is darker and moodier, with smeared pads and grainy ambience making for a big and shadowy chamber of end-of-days techno that is full of foreboding, and finally ‘M44’ is more forceful and brutal, with reverb and electricity static adding texture to the cavernous airwaves. Compelling from start to finish, this is a fantastic debut from Modes.
