There are DJs, then there are DJs who capture—and live—a moment in dance music's evolution. Born in Los Angeles, but based in New York for the better half of a decade, Akua has established herself as the latter, an important voice in the North American techno scene. Akua's DJing practice is fueled by her research in the '90s techno music archive, with a special interest in the history and roots of techno within America. 

Akua's sets are raw extensions of the foundations laid by the pioneers of '90s U.S. techno. Most prominently, the work and influence of DJs like Jeff Mills, Claude Young and Jay Denham can all be heard across her mixes, as well as the spirit of Underground Resistance. Her interest in fast-paced techno comes from these traditions as well as own individualist streak—while there's no shortage of DJs who play high-BPM techno, you won't hear anyone else play it quite like she does.

Her old-school meets new-school sound has catapulted her from the New York underground into the European techno circuit, where recent gigs have seen her perform at dance music institutions like Berghain and Dekmantel. Akua's RA Podcast is her in full-throttle mode, featuring all the stripped-down, hypnotic groove of early techno aside rushes of searing acid, carefully speeding up until closing at a healthy sprint.

Fachwerk boss Mike Denhert rolls up on TECH-UM 006 with for another heavy selection of intuitive techno jams on his 'TESTET' EP. With the focus squarely on the dance floor the Berlin-born wizard's latest creations makes for another unique voyage into cutting edge techno.

Kostik with its dark wall of sound opens the release sporting an gargantuan bassline and metronomic percussion that resonates through the speakers. Freakin' Me offers a slow and low machine funk strut, with its heads-down groove and sassy vocal chops.

On the flip Mike hits out hard with Mino. A heady concoction that's one part Chicago, one part Detroit, one part Berlin, coming together to create the perfect party piece. Dehnert then closes with one final gem. Sampling a broken escalator from a NYC train station, he engineers layer upon layer of mechanical madness. Creative clanging. Welding sounds and strikes like a vibrating visionary, he presents a final silvery sonic sensation.

Elijah & Skilliam are at the forefront of a new wave of Grime artists, with their own Butterz imprint and events pushing and progressing the new Grime sound.

For those of you haven't experienced a Butterz night, every event is like a carnival, gone are the days of just a dark room, everyone eyes down. In recent years it felt like Grime had somehow lost it's way and become stagnant, with little setting every artist apart. Then Butterz came along. The vibe of the night was the most important thing on the agenda, with the boys injecting some fun into the Grime scene. This is reflected on the artists who are now part of the Butterz roster, with Royal-T and Champion releasing upbeat tunes with the dancefloor in mind, and the multi-talented Swindle showcasing that the scene has definitely come a long way musically.

Next month Butterz will be celebrating the 3rd Birthday at Cable with a lineup not to be missed. And as a little treat, Elijah & Skilliam have put together this 100% vinyl mix of some of the most recognisable Grime beats from the early days of the scene. Some absolute bangers in here... "Hoods Up".

Roots of Elijah & Skilliam - Old skool grime mix

After kicking off with an atmospheric rhythmic rock number from prog lords King Crimson, Peder Mannerfelt’s contribution to Bleep’s mix series settles into a run of driving leftfield club tracks. By blending entries from artists like Amazondotcom, Griffit Vigo and Robert Hood, Mannerfelt expertly straddles the line between classic techno modes and more progressive broken-beat innovations in the first half of this mix. The tempo picks up around the forty-minute mark, with Mannerfelt running 140 bpm joints that enmesh genres like dubstep, bassweight techno and junglist breaks. The final quarter of an hour may find Mannerfelt stripping out the pounding rhythms, but the mix remains arresting to the last - be it offering a widescreen, largely weightless collaboration between Mannerfelt and Louisahhh or Junior Delgado’s rocksteady dub-reggae joint ‘Midnight Rave’.
