Brooklyn's Jeanines specialize in ultra-short bursts of energetic but melancholy minor-key pop. With influences that run deep into the most crucial tributaries of DIY pop — Messthethics, the Television Personalities, Marine Girls, early Pastels, Dolly Mixture — they've crafted a style that is as individual as it is just plain pleasurable. Alicia Jeanine's pure, unaffected voice muses wistfully on the illusions of time, while My Teenage Stride/Mick Trouble mastermind Jed Smith's frantic Motown-esque drumming and inventive bass playing provide a thrilling rhythmic foundation.

"Winter In The Dark" and a lovely, jaunty cover of The Siddeleys' "Falling Off Of My Feet Again" provide great insight into what Jeanines are about. 60s-meet-80s melodies combine with timeless guitar jangle in a way that recalls everything from The Aislers Set and Saturday Looks Good To Me to more recent DIY pop groups like Parsnip and Chook Race. Album opener "Either Way," "Hits The Bone" and "Where We Go" hearken back to some of the most intriguing bands of the C86/C88 era, when bands like Jesse Garon & The Desperadoes crafted perfect pop gems enlivened by the inspiration of punk.

Gorgeous songs like "Where I Stand," "Too Late" and "In This House" are windows into Alicia's lyrical style and inspiration. She expands: "I'm kind of obsessed with mortality and how weird the passage of time is so I think my lyrics reflect that. I definitely lean into that kind of melancholy state of mind when trying to think of lyrics, while trying to avoid cliches!" The marriage of the minor-key melodies and melancholic lyrics is powerful and make Alicia's songs all the more memorable, especially so on songs like "No Home," with its echoes of girl harmony post-punk groups like Grass Widow and Household.

Clearly, with 16 great songs included, there is a lot at work here on this standout debut album. Jeanines have been compared to such cult pop icons as Dear Nora, Black Tambourine, and more recent acts like Veronica Falls and Girl Ray, but their dark, modal melodies and pensive, philosophical lyrics, along with Smith's versatile but ever-economical musicality, ensure them a place of their own in today's crowded but boisterously healthy DIY pop scene.

After a summer tour in 2017 with Looms, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sharif Mekawy came home to the end of a relationship. This heartbreak led to a month wherein he confined himself to a month of writing music on his roof.

Now, that time has gone on to inform Looms’ third full-length, The Way Up, out May 3rd via Good Eye Records. Joined by Harry Morris Jr. (guitar), Andy Murray (bass) and Harry Louis Cozza (drums), the ten-song album grapples with the life-consuming churn of lost love, “what ifs?” and rose-colored memories that warp over time.

Featuring a guest performance from guitar legend Nels Cline, “Eclipse” sparks to life as Looms establish a lush instrumental bedrock. Although vibrant in its full band form, "The Way Up"’s lead single goes back to Mekawy’s lonely time up on that roof as an eclipse began, forcing himself to stay up there until the song was completed.

Such is the push and pull at the heart of "The Way Up"; a heart-rending, expansively and beautifully realized full band effort born from a brutal, solitary reconciliation. Listeners who have loved and lost will find a friend in Loom’s latest effort, no matter where one is in their journey.

"Historically, the split album has been a way for independent artists (and the labels that represent them) to share the burdens of production while sonically bolstering each other’s work. The reasons for a couple of punks to split a vinyl record are almost self-evident given the binary nature of the medium and its high cost of production. Such considerations are not entirely beside the point in the digital age, but the traditional half-and-half form of the split is almost arbitrated by our adapted listening habits (not to mention the can of worms that may come with rights to hosting, streaming, and direction of online traffic). It only seems inevitable then that those working at the fore of the new underground would modify the form inventively. 4 partners road is one such mutation.

The album volleys between the regal dreamstates of Lily and Horn Horse and zany episodes by Banny Grove. Each duo presents their own singular take on art pop. The resulting dialogue is confounding but exciting. Iconically absurd outbursts by dadaist diva Banny Grove soften the dry, mechanical precision that lends Lily and Horn Horse their sheen. Conversely, the bubblegum sensibilities of the latter bring out some of Grove and Co.’s tastiest work to date. 4 partners road is a whirlwind of an album birthed out of the closest of friendships. True affinity sits between these partners.

Banny Grove, the pop icon persona of Louise Chicoine, sits at the crossroads of Kate Bush, Hannah Montana, and Pee-Wee Herman. She lives in a material world, a Southern California doll house from which she comments upon the maladies–minor and grand–of the modern world. The work she puts forward with bandmate (and Nicey Music co-founder) Peter Nichols (a.k.a. Grape Room) reads at times like an American DIY response to PC Music: artificial and off-kilter but makeshift, approachable. Here, Grove takes her vocal performance to commendable new heights. The operatic soaring that punctuates her first contribution to the album, “So Happy So Good,” is a masterclass in how to make an entrance (Klaus Nomi anyone?). And little sums up Banny Grove’s disposition better than the melodramatic, tragic despair with which she delivers the condemnation, “I gave a damn for you/ Mr. Romeo,” atop a sugary ball pit soundtrack of an instrumental. One forgets that such sentiments aren’t typically expressed by the same voice that, only tracks earlier (and with equal lack of composure) boasted, “I feel so happy, I feel so good/ I want to tell the whole neighborhood.” Banny’s back and she’s got plenty to say.

Perhaps more centered in their expression (if all the more strange for it), Lily and Horn Horse hail from upstate New York. The still-young duo of Lily Konigsberg and Matt Norman unleashed their layered, expressive, mutant pop upon the world with their 2017 debut Lily On Horn Horse. Having sowed the seed for collaboration, they followed it up that same year with Next To Me, a perfectly distilled statement of their sound. Cruising through 19 tracks in 25 minutes, Next To Me was an accelerated take on the contemporary state of pop by a duo with equal admiration for both Herbie Hancock and Liz Phair. The duo’s contributions to 4 partners road are atmospheric and catchy, grooving yet mellow. Konigsberg and Norman sing with a calm demeanor, understating their more absurd lyrics, ones that might be just as comfortable on Banny tracks (“I went to school/ And then I bought a car”).

As a studied fan of both artists, I can’t help but hear each duo’s influence on the other, even if the resulting “sides” feel so distinct. It’s the sort of resonance between artists that comes from friendship and the exchange that occurs when you tirelessly share show bill after show bill at small venues across the USA. These groups recognized their affinity and managed to move ever-so-slightly nearer. Positive actual joy."

It’d be a laborious task to run through all of Fritch’s many accolades, since 2009 he has released over 20 albums and composed music for over 30 feature films and more than a hundred short films. Lost Tribe Sound has been by his side since the beginning, releasing a few of his finest stand alone scores, including the critically acclaimed, ‘The Waiting Room’, ‘Eagle Hunters in a New World’, and ‘The Old Believers.’ Of course, LTS could boast for days about what a musical genius we believe he is. Yet, having written so many of these press rants for Fritch in our time, we’ll try to curb ourselves at the risk of preaching to the choir or sounding disingenuous.

That isn’t to say, Fritch isn’t well deserving of mountains of praise. We are honestly amazed that his film music hasn’t attracted the attention of more major motion picture studios. To date, Fritch has penned imaginative and impressive scores for narrative and documentary productions that run the gamut of most every imaginable genre and aesthetic. From raw and emotional films that uncover startling humanitarian and ecological crises, such as 2016’s Oscar-nominated short film ‘4.1 Miles,’ and National Geographic’s sweeping ’Into The Canyon,’ to eccentric and nuanced biopics and documentaries on figures such as Ursula K LeGuinn, Bill Nye and Johnny Cash. Fritch has found unique and artful voices for these wide ranging stories.

Most of those familiar with Fritch, know only of his albums as a singer songwriter or genre-elusive multi-instrumentalist, which truly represent a small fraction of the depth and range of his work. ‘Deceptive Cadence…’ gathers the most remarkable and memorable pieces from Fritch’s vast catalog of film compositions. Rather than filling up two volumes with half assembled film cues and fragmented themes, Fritch has gone to great lengths with ‘Deceptive Cadence…’ to make sure both volumes tell a story, build theme, and create a satisfying full album experience as good as any movie they may have come from. While this music once graced a particular film, show, or commercial, it has all been reimagined, reworked and made whole in post-production to complete the epic narrative of ‘Deceptive Cadence…’
