Snakehole has returned, and on the Miami/Philadelphia noise rock duo’s new LP, Interludes of Insanity, KC Toimil and Autumn Casey up the clarity, volume, crunch, and sophistication in a major way. Recorded by the prolific and precise Ben Greenberg (Uniform, Mission Hubble) in Hudson, New York’s cavernous Waterfront Studios, Interludes of Insanity showcases the duo’s headway into layering and experimentation. The LP makes no qualms; it’s the main act, and it wedges itself firmly into the tradition of cohesive, almost narrative, albums.

Autumn and KC reiterate that the LP is a continuation of their self-titled 12”, and though there are similarities, Interludes of Insanity feels more realized, demonstrating a band fully in control of its sound and ethos. Fans of the 12” will find more snarling, filth-drenched grime rock, but, as that record hinted at, Snakehole here wields beauty just as easily as darkness. The piano sections that would peek their heads out of the woodwork sporadically on the 12” have become more full, more central. But there’s unease in the beauty, too — a little bit of reality. The album stands as a testament to self-actualization, and it’s as clear as it is engaging. But that’s what happens when your music isn’t confined to permutations on one song, isn’t it?

Considered by the band as their most fully realized statement, The Floating World is a snapshot of the last chapter of Wet Hair's tenure as central players in the Midwestern DIY experimental music scene. Wet Hair finished the year long writing and recording process fresh off an eventful West Coast tour with Merchandise right before all three members of the band decided to part ways with their longtime residence in Iowa City. The tracks were recorded and mixed at Flat Black Studios in Iowa City and were mastered by Carl Saff. Shawn Reed finished the striking jacket artwork in early 2017 -- a collage reflecting on the Japanese concept of ukiyo ("The Floating World") as it relates to a feeling of American suburban emptiness and longing.  



The Floating World is a kinetic collection of seven tracks that represent Wet Hair's most exciting, melodic and beautifully produced effort. On their follow up to Spill Into Atmosphere, Wet Hair revitalized their hybrid psych / krautrock / synth pop sound, masterfully working shimmering synth swells and fiery drum and bass grooves into pointed explorations of growth and texture. Working in a style that has traditionally drawn excitement from long sonic build-ups, Wet Hair keenly sculpt these jams so the electric musicality only highlights the pop vocal leads. Tracks like “Dear Danae” and “Revealing” revel in their allusion to noise-pop, offering up simple, ear worm melodies that shine in the frantic orchestration. “Endless Procession,” the record’s 8-minute long jaunt works through a haze of twittering synths toward the ultimate goal of full-blown catharsis and ensuing decay. Meanwhile, cuts like “Through The Night” and “Lift The Stone” show off Wet Hair’s rock-solid rhythm section as they syncopate and shred support for crunchy synth melodies.

If you saw WALL play in NYC or at SXSW (they were No. 2 on Time Out Austin’s top picks for SXSW 2016) you will recognize some of the tracks on their new LP, Untitled. "Everything In Between" was often a set opener, albeit in an instrumental form. Here we find the definitive full band arrangement, which shows a group capable of generating wave after wave of engaging post-punk. First single "High Ratings" advances the strengths of WALL's self-titled EP with it's look at modern anxiety stemming from social media addiction: "We're all guilty," as singer Sam York howls. Their rocking cover of Half Japanese's classic "Charmed Life" is probably the closest track in tone to "Cuban Cigars," the pop moment on the WALL EP. True to the original, it features perfectly skronky sax from Pill’s Ben Jaffe. "River Mansion" displays Vince McClelland's extensive post-punk guitar vocabulary with squalls, shrieks and plinks over the band's elegant Kroutrock groove with York and Skadden's cooing vocals occasionally synching with a slippery guitar riff. Fans of Skadden's former group, Finally Punk will appreciate "Save Me" – a tale of desperation with Skadden sharing lead vocal duties along with York. These are just a few examples of songs from this diverse and intense LP, showing us a band stretching out sonically and stylistically at their peak and right before their untimely demise. 

So there you have it -- a testament to a band that formed in an instant, burned brightly and left us with two great records. Did you see WALL at Palisades, The Silent Barn, Alphaville, Union Pool, and all the rest of them? Let this LP remind you or take you there for the first time. Third thug rock masterpiece from these Orlando miscreants, laying waste to the land with gruff voice and loud, raw guitar backed by in-pocket bass and drums. Lately the boot-stomp beat has been ringing true across the land- born of Slade and AC/DC, Rose Tattoo and Coloured Balls, it's the sound shared by punkers Slaughter And The Dogs and modern acts such as Melbourne's POWER. Golden Pelicans have blended the blasting beat with only the strongest essences of punk, hardcore, and metal on their latest album, Disciples Of Blood. Guitar attack has been given more space to do it's damage, and the band have moved into a whole new, even more aggressive direction. Check out the cover, once again by Mac Blackout -  this time the mayhem has been taken from Black & White into full-color carnage. Just as their live shows are a guaranteed ceiling-breaker, this album rages from note one to note last, perfect to accompany  late-night speeding through residential back alleys, smashing bottles and crashing into trash cans. "Break the cosmos, with your mind!" seems an appropriate and possible goal when screamed at you by vocalist Erik Grincewicz.  And remember... it ain't psychedelic until you kill someone. This record is psychedelic as hell. Whoo!

Shelflife and Opposite Number are thrilled to be releasing Dream About You, the new 7" from The Fireworks. This three-song single is the follow-up to the Black and Blue EP, released this past summer. Dream About You is out April 21st on limited 7" vinyl and digital formats. 

The Black and Blue EP's four songs marked the most rocking we had heard The Fireworks, yet still kept the catchy melodies and pop mastery we'd come to expect from them. Now, as a new year and a new release are upon us, The Fireworks have added new singer Beth Arzy to the group, following Emma Hall's departure late last year. Beth, who one might recognize from the fantastic Trembling Blue Stars and Shelflife's own The Luxembourg Signal, blends great melodic sensibility with a cool, nonchalant edge. And, in a heartwarming and ear-pleasing combination, Hall still contributes backing vocals to the 7"-a nice sendoff as the band enters into a new chapter of their existence. 

The Dream About You 7", much like the Switch Me OnLP, was recorded and produced by David Holmes (recently worked on Unloved's "Guilty Of Love") at Soup Studios. The single comes and goes in a whirlwind of big choruses, irresistible melodies and a healthy dose of fuzzed-out guitar. Fans old and new of The Fireworks will be happy to hear that the band's energy is as electric as ever, and they manage to pack quite a punch in only three songs. "We've Been Wasting Time" is a noisy, Jesus and Mary Chain-indebted earworm that refuses to be listened to passively. The title track's grabbing harmonies and "Better Without You Now"'s jangly, crisp guitars showcase the band in top form, and once these three songs are over you'll only want to flip the record again. The band's name seems to almost hint at the fact that the songs are here and gone in the blink of an eye; bursts of beauty that are just as ephemeral as they are powerful.

These are turbulent times we’re living in. Sure, you can have someone ride a burrito to your house in a matter of minutes or use the internet to speak to anyone basically anywhere, but you only have to catch the smallest snippet of news to get the sense we’re rolling downhill with the brake chords cut. Washington punks, The Sea Life know this all too well. Their self titled album is full to the brim with themes of disillusionment and self-awareness, while still infused with a real push for something, anything better. The second single to be taken from the self titled debut is Blame, a fuzzy pop masterpiece that sounds like The National getting drunk with Pinegrove.

The album is set to be co-released on 12" by Art is Hard in the UK and Babe City Records in the US, both on May 26th.

Daybreak tends to creep up on you. Emerging from starry darkness, the sun wobbles at first but proceeds on its scheduled arc. You can’t help but wonder if it ever looks back in disbelief, or regret.  This feeling of self-reflection—of looking back to see how far you’ve come—is precisely the sentiment of Thawing Dawn, the first solo record from A. Savage, released on Dull Tools.

The songs on Thawing Dawn form a guided tour through the romantic environs of A. Savage’s mirrored mind. While some were written recently, other tunes were penned over the past decade. For one reason or another, these compositions didn’t land with any of Savage’s other groups, and instead are presented now as a distinct collection. Reflecting back, Savage says, “Once I realized I had a small body of work that didn’t fit anywhere else, I started to examine the commonalities: What’s the common denominator of all this and how I can expand on it?”

Savage is best known as the frontman for Parquet Court, a duty split with fellow Texan Austin Brown. Their last record, Human Performance, delved into the emotional wreckage of a broken heart, to critical acclaim.  But with Thawing Dawn, it’s clear that Savage has matured. While assembling the record, he fell in love. Now, for the first time, we hear songs about being on the inside of love. Rather than lamenting the end of a relationship, we hear a voice trying, in the moment, to make sense of love’s mysteries. “Part of this maturity,” he says, “is reflecting on something when it’s happening, not just when it’s gone.” 

Thawing Dawn gives us honesty: We see the artist at home in bed, more singer-songwriter portrait than esoteric statement. Throughout his discography Savage has long abbreviated his first name as a kind of writerly gesture. He says, of the move, “I am an uncivilized member of modern civilization--I’m just a savage.” Like Duchamp’s R. Mutt signature on a urinal, the shortening embodies a mischievous directness, enabling this savage to introduce his slanted honesty into the universe.

“I always like it when records are good representations of communities,” Savage says, and this one succeeds in this regard. These ten songs were recorded between December 2016 and June 2017 by a cast of friends in Jarvis Taveniere’s Thump Studios in Brooklyn. Members of Woods, Ultimate Painting, PC Worship, EZTV, and Psychic TV all lend their talents.  Savage’s voice, once shouted into mosh pits, now glides confidently above its backing band. Thawing Dawn marks the arrival point for Savage as a sensitive and skilled vocalist.  A strain of rural inquiry tinges the soundscape, an ongoing trope in Savage’s writing most powerfully felt on Parkay Quart’s ballad “Uncast Shadow of a Southern Myth.” On this record it is stronger, with a healthy helping of pedal steel guitar, a chorus of female back-up vocals, four familiar chords, and maybe the truth, all layered throughout these songs. Their titles also steer us this way, but don’t fully convey the hidden intricacies. “Buffalo Calf Road Woman” opens the record in a burst of C&W energy.  The staccato pop piano of “Eyeballs” lays crisply beneath a refrain of heartbreak. “Wild Wild Horses” finds him confessing inside a Talk Talk bubble of guitar static and organ. The build-up of “What Do I Do” yields a guitar freak out that Parquet Courts fans will recognize. You could two-step to the swing of “Phantom Limbo.” “Ladies from Houston” is a Leonard Cohen-like ramble through a party scene. Finally, the title track is a suite of three interwoven songs that closes the record in a beautifully cinematic style. 

Throughout, A. Savage delivers one-off lines of razor-sharp observation that will stick in your brain, only to surface when you’re least prepared to handle their insights. When you put your copy of Thawing Dawn on your turntable and drop the needle, you’ll learn what A. Savage has to say about romance in our modern world. Keep your ears open--it’s worth hearing.
