After 21 years of DJing, I played at my friends’ wedding for the very first time. The night before, I asked the groom what kind of tracks they liked. He just said, “Didn’t you see the Telegram group with the wedding playlists as inspiration?” I hadn’t. My week was so fully packed but when I finally checked, I found the group buried between ominous Berlin afterhour chats — and was stunned to see that the bride and groom had carefully prepared 80 danceable tracks for us DJs.

So I started building my set around their selection. There was plenty of overlap with my own library, especially with a lot of classics from the time of the rising of Berlin's electronic music scene.  I bought a few songs I didn’t have already, and then added another 100 from my collection. While preparing, I got goosebumps. The love in that music reminded me exactly why I became a DJ in the first place: to share songs with friends and craft compilations meant especially for one person — or, in this case, two.

The wedding itself was so beautiful I could have cried. And I did. Right after the very first transition, when I looked up and saw the couple dancing together deeply in love in the front row. From then on it was pure bliss — everyone swept up inside the warm bubble of love’s magic.

About the mix: House has endless possibilities. For me, it is not about being able to define, if it’s house, techno or something in between. I’m all here for the in-betweens of both genres & I love to mix various styles to tell a story that’s entertaining, that’s outside the box – maybe even challenging. Because it's very likely that I'll take you from the after hour to a rave, from 120 to 140 bpm, before you even realize it. What I love most about House music: it’s vocal. It literally communicates, it talks to you, it’s sexy, it’s queer, it’s blooming, it’s grooving, it opens up. And that’s also how I like to see a crowd. House is about layers and side quests – not labels. Not a one way street. This mix is special to me, because I got the chance to transport what I like most about DJing & House. That is: evoking a moment of surprise for the listeners, but also myself when it comes to the combination of all the different vibes I love in various genres. Because in the end it’s about creating irritation, strong feelings, being loud, proud & in community – that’s what House is and does.

What a Playground is a platform run by @lenabrecht aiming to feature emerging artists who share her passion for various facets of House music. A space of warm tunes, soft vibes, energetic melodies and new encounters. 

What a Playground aims to create an open and safer space for especially FLINTA* and BIPoC artists, encouraging them to play first sets to an appreciative, curious and diverse crowd. Curating DIY gatherings since summer 2022, the format is not only about creating pleasure and joy, but also about caring for each other. During each gathering we invite everybody to support a trusted organization whose work helps underrepresented people.

Here on SoundCloud sets from our community will be shared. Furthermore, this accounts aims to push the visibility of FLINTA* and BIPoC producers/artists.

What a Playground was co-initiated by @josi_ane who's focussing on different projects since August 2024. Thanks for sharing your energy, time and passion with us.
