A selection of deep house/techno tracks by Essential Night

On Fridays, as the last work day of the week approaches 2100 hours,  the garbage and recycling chutes from arcologies around the world open, spilling any offerings of week from the upper levels to the lower levels. Orphans, drifters, miscreants, the augmented, illegals, the desperate, the unemployed, and sometimes the occasional adventurous upper level dweller will often await its opening eagerly. The junk heap begins to fill as this week's offerings of obsolete or broken technology, spoiled foodstuffs (and pristine offerings from earlier in the day), and the occasional body or firearm (from upper level gang violence) falls and tumbles out onto the depositing yard below.  

This is a wonderful bounty to be had for the destitute. While the nice automated deposit yards are usually controlled by bio-manufacturing or recycling corps, most of the ones where this ritual occurs are run by the local gangs, punks, or shadow societies. Safety standards at these gatherings are haphazard at best; there have been incidents that have occurred where some attendants were crushed by falling debris. The upper and lower level denizens usually have an understanding and respect the ritual as an cordial interchange. In a world of excess, sometimes convenience is a lot easier if everyone benefits. The "pit bosses" are also known for their fair and equitable treatment of all citizens of the lower levels. This gathering is known as "Funday" in the arcologies and hive cities in the North American Federated States. In South American Colonia (SAC), the locals call it "la misa", akin to the old Sunday religious gatherings that occurred in the early 21st century before religion was banned throughout the world.    

When the last of the refuse land in the junk heap and the garbage chutes close, the junk heap is secured by yard workers, inspected by the on-site safety manager, and sorted with help from some 1st gen HumanMashcine workers. Items are tagged and appraised accordingly.  Then, the local "priests" will come and give their blessings by saying a few incantations and related techno babble, giving thanks to the upper denizens for their generosity. The DJs and musicians will then start their set, cranking up the volume and pumping out some nice grooves from antique speakers and subwoofers. Thus begins the "Funday" festivities that will last until dawn. 

While the sorting and appraisal is occurring, the populace, eager to receive the offerings of the week, will approach the staging area of the deposit yard where pit workers will hand out a number of chits. Chits are used for the auctioning of the sorted goods. The number of chits are given are also dependent of your contribution towards lower level society. A slum-doc might be earn more chits, compared to a lower level enforcer.  

Once chits are handed out, the procession of the destitute will shuffle and dance in an orderly fashion towards the deposit yard. The sacred ritual of the dance, bound by tradition throughout the decades, is strictly adhered to. Individuals will patiently roam the deposit yard and place bids on items they value using their chits, similar to an open English auction. Food and drink vendors, subsidized by the pit bosses, will also offer their goods to the participants in return for chits that they can spend. Dancing, chanting, bidding, and general extolling of the generosity of upper level citizens reaches a fever pitch by midnight.

Procyon alveare, or hive raccoons commonly known, will often attend 'Funday' gatherings a few hours before midnight, preferring though to dance and observe from sidelines. Tonight on 'Wanderers of the Megacity: Funday Mass', we will be broadcasting live from Shikaakwa-Arco, taking a closer look at these nocturnal animals and their fascinating behavior that continues to surprise scientists.

3 QUESTIONS to JAN OBERLAENDER:

Q) While listening to your podcast I realize that there are so many influences inside your music nowadays. Is that true?

A) It´s funny when you think you are up to date with fresh music by just downloading new tracks every week. But when I selected music for this podcast I just realized that I love the same special elements in tracks all the years yet. It´s running like a thread through all the time. Of course my CD library was huge and there were so many tracks inside which just made me shake my head and say “Oh what the hell is this?”. Well, my intention was to mix only tracks which will also work in a club or a festival nowadays, so the tracks have to be a bit more timeless. To be honest it was really difficult for me to do such a classic mix. Meanwhile I thought about to give up and mix a podcast with new tracks only but finally I´m happy that I made it.
 
Q) What´s your favorite festival in Europe and why is it so special?

A) My most favorite one is the Garbicz Festival. I really like it so much because it´s not that big and not too small. The area with the sea is amazing and there are so many friends around that you can´t even go 5 steps without talking. Also the music is completely my kind of music and it´s not that often to find a festival with excellent food.
 
Q) Which releases are coming next?

A) Well mixing this podcast needed some days so now I concentrate producing a 2 track EP which will be released on Heinz Music and I hope to finish that in June or July. Yes, I´m quite slow in producing.

Mark Reeve is a name synonymous within techno, having released on labels such as Drumcode, Cocoon and Bedrock in recent years. These releases have served as a platform for him to tour the world as a DJ, playing esteemed festivals like Awakenings, Tomorrowland and B My Lake. 

2017 see’s him return to Truesoul with ‘New Path EP’, comprising of two blistering tracks in ‘New Path’ and ‘Acceso’. Both tracks are teeming with dark sounds and heavy textures and are typical of Reeve. The title track ’New Path’ is a homage to his groove laden past, calling on big bass lines and sweeping percussion that takes you on a ride through the track. ‘Acceso’ is more of a rolling affair with a thumping beat and some divine synth work. These are certified floor fillers and given the Adam Beyer stamp of approval.

Following the mega-hit “Let’s Go Dancing” and the micro-hit “Fever,” Nightclub marks the third release from techno truth-tellers Tiga vs. Audion. To announce the EP, Tiga recently gave a lengthy audio press conference while driving a Turbo company car all the way down to City Hall. A partial transcript follows:

ON THE INSPIRATION

“Living in contemporary society? It’s a joke. But what’s no joke is that rough times call for rough customers, and this EP finds two top techno producers in the mood for ballsiness, reflecting the times with a harder-edged sound, harder-edged artwork, and harder-edged calls for our leaders to remember that the dance floor was built on unity, plurality, and unshacklable animality.”

ON THE TRACK TITLES

“After careful study, we came to the conclusion that the worse the titles, the more ‘techno’ the tracks. A-side ‘Stabbed in the Back’ takes its name from the fact that the track has keyboard stabs in it. Maybe my least favourite title of anything I’ve ever done, which is remarkable considering the runner-up was an unreleased stab-free track called ‘Doctors Without Keyboards.’ ‘Pink Bells’ was originally called ‘The Bells’ but I was told that this guy Geoff had already used it. ‘Nonstop’ got its name from the fact that I was really on a roll with bad titles at the time.”

ON THE CREATIVE PROCESS

“It’s extremely challenging to make instrumental techno with enough of a hook and enough of a funk to stand out, and it’s exponentially more difficult when I know deep down I could make everything alright so easily with just the sound of my voice. We bought a set of Bryan Adams Studio Flash Cards, which instructed us to make the kind of hyper-utilitarian dance tracks we could play in our own DJ sets. Sometimes, even musicians need to be reminded to put themselves first.”
