REVIEW: 

Whypeopledance premiered the first video from After Altamont's Elektriki Rembetologia 10 days ago. Words are slowly taking shape, and the first thing we say is: The new EP from the duo Stavros Potamitis and Constantinos Parisinos is an ambitious piece! This is the second EP from their collaborative Live band project but the first with this type of appetite to seize an XXI century moment hand in hand with tradition. Released on their Inside Out Records, two renditions, one original, and four remixes celebrate the love between traditional Greek instruments and analog electronic equipment.

Milking inspiration from Rebetiko, late 19th century songs of poor Greeks, you might think you're in for one of the better mid-tempo rides of the year but the game changes for even better with the first notes sung by vocalist Dunja Botić on the EP opener, "The Spasw Koupes." The dragging it's-a-hard-knock-life vocal continues to surprise on EP's second rendition of a traditional Greek song, 
"Mpournabalia." With each blink of an eye, grainy visions of laundry spread over balconies appear. Skin thickened by the sun and women leaning over washbasins for a drop of cold water. Unspoken stories of infidelities that you can cut with a knife. Who is drinking who to death. That type of heartbreaking questions.

"Aspra Xwmata" is the album's original, a hypnotic treat for the hunters of the spoken word, with Athens legend Anna Maria Harokopou behind the mic. Makes us imagine one of Androniki’s wild nights out. Androniki inspired the creators of accompanying videos, Thalia Tsiatini (director /producer) and Melina Koutsofta (choreography, performer), as the woman who got shot by her own brother for wearing trousers first and going to cafes to play cards and smoke with her lovers. 

Lamusa II's is the first of the remixes and pays the utmost respect to the original "The Spasw Koupes," offering only a sprinkle of testosterone over, thus leaving minimal intervention.

Anna Disclaim's remix emphasizes the vocal by speeding things up and manipulating the atmosphere with big build-ups and two-step microwork beneath. 

METAMAN's remix of "Mpournobalia" evokes the nostalgic sounds of electronic music pioneers, whereas Steve Pepe goes for the dubby-yet-jazzy techno realities that go well with the austerity of the entire package.

That being said, as tough and grown-up as Elektriki Rembetologia is, it's twice as ready for the dance floors of spring 2023.
