If Guatemala is on the map of the Dark Disco/Indie Dance scene, it is because of the global recognition Fabio Me Llaman Solteiro (SXDNS187) has achieved as a DJ and producer. Now, in order to consolidate even more the importance of the Caribbean country to the high-quality underground music world, Fabio established the project Sonido Moderna, a micro-label and music collective devoted to showcasing the interesting Central American sonority through the release of original pieces and collaborations with international artists.

After the acclaimed debut album, a compilation featuring local heroes Alan Es, Mike Rowave, Mverto Futura, and Fabio himself, plus Martian Superstars Hanzo & Yaman (SXDNS065), ID_UA (SXDNS229), MIJO, Max Jones (SXDNS234), among others, the second episode – “Gentel Decay” EP – brings together Israeli producer Mishell (SXDNS228) and a Latino Dream Team: ALF CHAMPION, Balam (SXDNS048), and Mike Rowave, who provided savoury remixes.

The track we chose to review/premiere brings ALF CHAMPION, an experimental producer, DJ, and visual artist from Guadalajara, Mexico, remodelling and overhauling the already intricate “Lost My Bongo's”. The Shamanic aura of the original is still present in ALF’s version but is now not so evident. The Mexican virtuoso took Mishell’s theme to a more breakbeat and old school rave-ish road whose outcome is a track more embodied and dirtier, ready to wreak havoc on the dance floor. Hats off, lad!

Auf Togo is the long-time collaboration between Sasa Crnobrnja and Clement Cachot-Coulom, who merge their sounds and experiences for their album, ‘Movements’ out 24th September via SaS Recordings. Inspired by the Cosmic disco sounds of the late 70’s/early 80’s, the 8-track LP skirts along the borders of electronic music, rock, funk and beyond. Through understanding and integration, the pair have come together on ‘Movements’ to present a body of work that is truly representative of their artistry.

Sasa and Clem, come from opposite worlds but share a deep respect for one another’s art. Sasa Crnobrnja originating from the deep, disco-laced house duo of In Flagranti (Kitsune, Phantasy, Gomma & more) and also Mytron & Ofofo (Les Yeux Orange) combines with, Clement Cachot-Coulom from bands The Fabulous Penetrators and Big Girls. Meeting in London around 2009, the pair have since developed a strong friendship and musical togetherness. In Sasa, Clem found someone who allowed him to explore a variation of styles and genres, breaking free of the creative shackles of songwriting for a band. 

“There was no masterplan for ‘Movements’, we just went about making music together in the way we would normally. We wanted to make people dance together in a club and bring together our shared musical interests, it was important to us with the album that it had a strong positive vibe underpinning the whole thing. We could envisage the tracks as Clem was playing the riffs and the album came together in the most natural way” – Auf Togo (Sasa Crnobrnja and Clement Cachot-Coulom)

As Auf Togo, they present a sound that echoes the richness and flavour of vintage recording equipment and instruments whilst holding the edge and sharpness of modern studio techniques. With this comes a loose, almost improvised sound that operates well within the rigid confines of house music, blurring the lines at every opportunity. With 4 successful releases already to their name, plus two well-received collaborations with duo Becker & Mukai, they now turn their attentions to the LP format to express their full eclecticism. 

From the louche Hawaiian jazz opening of ‘Along The Dotted Line’ to the psych-funk of ‘Pan Con Tomate’, and from the electronic wanderings of ‘Mexico’ to the cinematic intensity of closing ballad ‘Radical Departures’, the scope of ‘Movements’ is wide. Providing a captivating glimpse into the minds of Sasa and Clem, as it slides in tempo and pace, embracing an ever-expanding volume of styles and genres on its way. 

Unconventional in its production, stems and samples are extracted from Clement’s riffs and jams on guitar, bass and keys, all of which are then ultimately sown together by Sasa’s expert production skills. The result is ‘Movements’, representing elements of both artists. With tracks that fit both strongly within the club setting tied down by their raw, hypnotic grooves and absorbing songs that are suited to home-entertaining, the album is reinforced with a consistent positive energy. 

Offering a new proposition from the pair, ‘Movements’ is an invitation from Sasa & Clem to join them on their eclectic journey as Auf Togo. From 70’s psych-rock to Balearic Beats, from Space Disco to Afro Beat, this is an LP unashamed to wear its influences on its sleeve.

San Francisco based record label Roam Recordings celebrates its 100th release with a compilation from beloved alumni and new artists offering original work spanning darker shades of disco, cosmic techno, psychedelic, and acid house. What started as a group of ravers in the mid 90s that roamed the countryside (mostly in the US, Canada, and Mexico) looking for parties has evolved under the direction of its boss Jason Peters into a record label featuring a diverse array of internationally known artists. The intent of the record label is to continue the journey in search of new sounds while honoring the past. The Roam 100 Compilation is a milestone in that journey. It has been arranged to be enjoyed from beginning to end and to be rifled through at will.

"Delicately laid introduction, smooth fade-in, and amazingly executed swishes and swooshes, not only in the beginning but throughout the whole song, sets a strong foundation and holds up till the very end. Not to mention the clever use of synths and other gloomy electronic elements that not only casts a bright light to hint at a genre but also to set a certain mood. Despite being a new incarnation of disco, it has a distinct house flavor. As pretty much every dance song in the industry, it has this engaging and also charming synth-bass sequence, for some it might seem overused and can get annoying over time, but I always say this - "if it fits, it sits". Just as I am a fan of this particular bass practice in the songs, I am also a fan of sonar sounds and especially the combination of both - bass and sonar, if done right and this track delivers without any doubt, I'm sold. However, this isn't quite the selling point of this wonderful track. What got me hooked, was something else. I would say it was a blend of pretty much everything Tantra had to offer in this anthem of sorts, although a few elements stood out above the rest. The sophisticated use of wind instruments with the addition of vocal inclusion was spot on, the mix of these two just added a life-like experience, cultural mirroring phenomenon was so present, it made me so involved, I completely lost a track of time. Speaking about time, I usually avoid songs that are longer than 7 minutes or so, and when I saw the duration of this song, I was like - "Oh man, this is gonna be a drag". 
But fortunately, this James Rod edit surprised me in more ways than I can imagine. I strongly recommend this beautiful and so down-to-earth masterpiece, that not only provides a solid listening experience but is also technically dense and arranged in the most explicit way possible." - Quixotical Music psychoanalyst Vidas Stanynas.

Bordello A Parigi is delighted to welcome back the triumvirate of Sergio Mesa (IAMNOTAROBOT), David Jornet (Strange2, AMPbEND) and vocalist Maia J. In 2020 the partnership, better known as Hypnotique, released the stunning 12” ‘La Pénombre’. Armed with four tracks of emotive synth-pop, the group returns with ‘Solitude’. Crisp beats and lovelorn lyrics characterise the title piece, a warbling melody weaving and winding its way through tear-streaked words. ‘Ce Monde’ takes a different direction. Keys are upbeat with just a touch of brooding while vocals are distant yet sensual. Maia J’s incredible vocal range comes to the fore on this record, nowhere more than in the deep and layered ‘Le Divan’. Drums scuttle and spike against flowing synthlines as lyrics smoulder with an inchoate intensity. The tone, and language, change for the finale. Arpeggiators rumble and the band shift to English for the elegance and energy of ‘Paralyzed’. Four beautifully crafted synth cuts from an incredibly talented trio.

Belgian dj & producer Mugwump is an elusive presence with a solid tastemaker reputation preceded by in-famous DJ residencies at mythic Belgian clubs and a long-standing recording relation with Cologne’s Kompakt records, ongoing DJ support from the late Andrew Weatherall as well as a large catalogue of electronic ‘disco-techno’ records, released on leading labels R&S, Gigolo, Cocoon, Endless Flight, Eskimo, Permanent Vacation or International Feel. Mugwump runs the Leftorium clubnight in Brussels and his own Subfield label with indie power-house !K7.

Following albums "Unspell" (a mixture of slo-mo disco, new-beat, psychedelic pop and balearic) and "Drape" (a postpunk turn as a live band setting), Mugwump is back with new album “Pneuma” and its first anthem « Breakout » which revives the worldwide 80’s jazz-funk-pop hit from UK band Swing Out Sister (formed by members from A Certain Ratio and Magazine).
