Opening proceedings with a meditative, shadowy remix of Timothy Clerkin’s Primary Function, Berlin’s Shokh takes us down into the depths, showcasing his masterful production skills with a lofi trip into the darkness.

Naïve records boss Violet immediately ups the tempo with her skippy, bass-laden take on Apollo View’s II, ratcheting up the original for maximum pumpiness!

Label friend Bawrut chimes in next with his dance floor destroying mix of False Flag from Dark Circles – phasers set firmly to Raze Everything To The Ground And Leave Nothing Standing, Bozza’s inimitable, weaponised Acid will stop the most ecstatic of clubbers in their tracks.

Rounding off, Italian Stallion Younger Than Me takes Shun’s I’ll Never Reach Your Level and turns up the Rave- O-meter to eleven, introducing some vigorous 303 and breakbeat action, pushing it to maximum gurn!

Up next on Glasgow's Sounds of Lava Lava is local producer Kieran Apter. He's the man at the helm of CB90 Dance Recordings, a label that's been home to the likes of Brain Dancing, Man Power and his own productions which touch on house, techno and acid. Now he brings a slice of the latter to SOLL with 'Begin Again', a hypnotic acid-driven cut carried along by raw, shuffling drum programming and a distorted vocal meditation, which is backed by a remix from another Scottish rising star, Liam Doc.

Following on from Tu Sei Pazza, Daniel Monaco returns to the Bordello with the bitter taste of the TB303 on his tongue. Acid Maria smoulders with the intensity of a Belgian new beat banger circa 1989. Smoky words whisper over rusted rhythms before the fog and strobe take hold. Cold strings haunt with snaking coils of 303 squawk growing ever bolder in this intense track. The flip is divided into two very different remixes. First up is Curses who approaches the piece in his own unique way. The fanfare and frigid lines of the original are expanded. Strings come care of guitars as a bright synth wave reimaging unfolds, a reimaging with one of the most daring breaks you are likely to ever hear. Younger Than Me close. This interpretation adds a fevered tone to the original. BPMs rise and pitches are pushed while chilly notes soon balloon into a frenzy to bring a full floor energy. Black Light Smoke fuses techno, EBM and post-punk on his Brain Dead EP, backed with a remix from Alessandro Adriani.

Black Light Smoke combines weighty drums and analog synths on four tracks with a common thread: the use of his own warped vocals. From the cowbell rhythms and suspenseful pads of ‘Brain Dead’ to the hard-hitting bleeps of ‘Nailed to the Ground’, he infuses his tracks with a rare character, quality and flair. The release also comes with a remix from Mannequin Records boss Alessandro Adriani, whose expertise sees him turn ‘Machines Don’t Love’ into a staggering EBM track.

Daytime Emmy-winning producer and songwriter Jordan Lieb aka Black Light Smoke has racked up releases on Scissor & Thread, Voodoo Down, Nein Records and his own Death Decay Magic. Known for his world-renowned sets featuring live vocals and his productions both in- and outside of electronic music, he’s undoubtedly an artist in a class of his own.

PREMIERE: Black Light Smoke - Brain Dead [ZONE]

Facets’ Impulse EP, out this October on Dischi Autunno, is made for the sweaty confines of the dancefloor’s fog-filled spaces—ones that flicker with strobes and neon lights, alight from the energy of the crowd. The New York City by way of Belgrade producer pillages the hypnotic beats of the 1980s Belgian new beat movement on his four track debut EP. With the additional flavors of Italo-disco and freestyle, all overtop the decidedly EBM bassline movements, the EP’s grooves are dangerously addictive as it twists and turns through moody atmospheres. Impulse was written during lockdown and, as Facets notes, was put together in haste: “It was produced somewhat fast,” he says, “and just had this impulse to finish and work on music at that time.”

“My Voice” finds strength in its repetition and trance-like rhythm; its clandestine and mesmerizing sample sets the attitude for the rest of the EP as it demands, “Relax… and accept it.” The track “New Dawn” feels like an extension of the new beat artist, Shakti, with its Middle Eastern-influenced synths that bellow over its chugging bassline. Acting as a peak hour track, “Impulse” demands attention with its synth stabs akin to the Rhythm Device banger, “Acid Rock”—here, Facets’ own interpretation is a powerful addition to the new beat genre. Finally, “Rush” manages to blend dance aesthetics together to create a sleek, polished result that could be compared to his fellow label mate, Curses. Impulse is an exciting first offering from Facets as an arsenal of reimagined underground club tracks that are fresh but, at the same time, remain familiar as a tribute to past dance movements.

Electric Shapes continue their busy schedule with an EP from Auren, a new addition to their ever-growing roster. Aptly named Electrically Shaped, the release is made up of four tracks that could soundtrack dark nights at the club or huge grandiose spaces. Its cinematic and atmospheric, matching rumbling bass lines and breakbeat rhythms with chopped and screwed vocal samples.
