Exclusive: Track 1 (MH Edit) [Fauve]

Hong Kong rooted and raised artists and Canto head diggers MH respectively RFX release the first edition of their Canto Club House project, a potpourri of four tracks reworked and reshaped to be played out on the dance floor and around. After a well-received digital release of Extinct Melodies From the Canto Club which gained the support by artists like Ben UFO, Tim Sweeney, Nd_baumecker or the Blessed Madonna, the demand for more Cantonese edits has been there and is  now finally satisfied. Club-friendly and cheesy but never crossing the line of becoming irrelevant is what characterizes this release, which is equally split into two edits from RFX and MH. The latter took on responsibility for the A1 and A2 while, Romain FX sprinkled his magic on the b-side of the vinyl. The A1 or Track 1 (MH Edit) takes one back to the 80s, to a time when clubs like DD's, Canton Disco or Hot Gossip opened their wild playgrounds in the Asian metropolis of Hong Kong as its nightlife revolved around hotels in those times, ringing in a new era of clubbing. MH's approach lets one re-experience this period of Hong Kong night clubbing with a bass line that vaults one right into the beforementioned events and the Disco-esque chords and vocals add the missing pieces for this total Canto-experience and journey through a 'decade that gave birth to big hair, shoulder pads, and great music'.

Canto Club House 001 EP will be released on Fauve Records on April 19th, 2021.

A walk through the subversive paths from the Kabukicho’s forbidden hood, to the decaying landscapes of the fictional nightclub Ghetto Hong Kong, brings a connection between beauty and chaos through an extravagant Acid Disco, which after reaching a certain state of euphoria, rests in a delight Minimal Wave balearic.

Quartier Groove Records releases its first EP “Ritmo del Barrio” that features two club weapons from the Spanish electronic music vaults of the 90s, TYU’s remix of Bravo & Dj’s 1989 one-hit wonder “Difacil Rap”, and Richard Fribert’s rework of the early electronic rumba track “Sueño Almohade” by Sombra y Luz. Both tracks have been licensed and agreed with the original labels and writers, and will be limited to 300 copies.

On the a-side, an edgy club revision of a 90s hip-house track that was originally written by a group of DJs compelling us to join them for a wild night out. TYU’s remix, that only makes use of the rad rapapella, makes a perfect match to the daring call and takes us to a 90s rave of today in full style, with its bold drums, slappy snares, trancy synths and road-paving bassline.

The flip comes with Richard Fribert’s powerful and fearless hi-NRG rework of the experimental rumba song “Sueño Almohade” by Sombra y Luz, a track that makes a clear flirt with the history of Spain, a country that was once the Muslim ruled area of “Al-Andalus”. Spanish passion meets Arabic mystique in this hard, slamming, acid ride of an update. The result, a DJ weapon to be reckoned with.

The two tracks comes together to form Ritmo del Barrio EP, “Quartier Groove” in Spanish, the project by label heads Richard Fribert & MOQST that was designed to encourage listeners to search for more unknown and forgotten music in the most unexpected of corners of the world.

While keepin' the foot on the gas pedal and building momentum, Kolegos follows up with a self-released EP. A melancholy-drenched baseline hip mover. Frontline original vocals dedicated as an Ode to friends and memories to come. The EP includes an Italo-synth stomper from Black Feeling and a tense organic techno interpretation from Jaroška.

Discos Capablanca return with a record from the mysterious Detroit-based Sharif Laffrey (we know little more than his place of birth, and that he likes to ride his bike and warm weather) who brings the heat on the Turn It Up 12". Recorded in Detroit in the late 80s and released on a cassette tape compilation in 1988, the original "Turn It Up" is a long forgotten gem from the period that Electro was beginning to morph and mutate into nascent forms of Techno. Excavated by Hugo Capablanca's label, the track is presented in an edited version that stays true to the original and complemented by an Acid Dub Not Dub version that implements plenty of deranged 303 action.

The end of another year was quickly approaching, signalled by cold, crisp nights and oversized winter coats and wooly hats. The park was covered in autumnal shades of sienna and orange that crunched underfoot as crowds of people made their way through the gates huddled together for warmth. The show was about to start. Gasps and cheers came from the crowd as huge fireworks exploded across the sky, painting the night with sparkling colours of pink, blue and green. It was a beautiful site to behold, a true spectacle.

Subsequently, Frenchman based in Sydney Caravan  - you’ve guessed it, on aime bien les Francais! - steps up with his electro boogie take. Mixed completely analog before recording straight onto tape, his jam sounds like something that would have been aired on Detroit’s “The New Dance” tv show in the early nineties.

HF: How did you discover this track?
FM: I was doing research over the lockdown, I was looking for proto techno releases from '88 to '91 and I've found this track on discogs.
It's a german production from '88 released on the amazing ZYX records. 

HF: Can you tell us more about the rework?
FM: The original track contains the famous speech by Martin Luther King "I have a dream" but I've decided to cut it and give more space to the instrumental parts and extend the acid elements. I think it's more effective on the dancefloor now.
