As Typeless steps into its fourth release, label head Aloka turns eyes and ears to the horizon with a shapeshifting drop of breakbeat, electro and ambient. Fusing together textural arrangements and genre hybrids, he sets his sights on experimentation with ‘Inta’.

The opening track ‘Inta’ moves with a dreamy, indirect gaze and wistful melodies as though sighing itself into existence. Amongst it all sits a subtle beat which carries it into the dancefloor realm, yet it’s when they apex together that its weight blooms from the core. ‘B4-XL’ begins almost as an ensuing chapter to its predecessor with its ambient washes, but
soon ripens into an antagonistic electro number that tumbles between raging synths and breaks.

On the B-side, ‘Chroma’ diffracts into a million colours, glassy eyed in its introduction but hiding tyrannica kicks and syncopations underneath a swooping bass. The closing track ‘Movement’ slinks straight into a workout-ready guise, merging panting exhalations, pearly synths and choppy breakbeats against the sensation of a spectral figure reaching a deep
state of flow.

With this second self-release on the label, it’s as though Aloka is so deeply immersed in hiscomplex vision that he’s stepped out of his body to watch it all unfold. There’s one word to describe this image of him in his effortless performance as both label curator and signee: fitting

FBN010 sees the return of some familiar faces to the label, alongside some exciting fresh faces. Broadly spanning system-rattling, breaks-infused, vocal-stuttering tracks, Departure sets the tone for the year ahead.
All profits raised from FBN010 will go towards UK-based charity Sister Supporter. Sister Supporter is a pro-choice, anti-harassment organisation, who are working towards achieving a national solution to allow those who wish to exercise their legal right to healthcare to do so without interference and judgement. On February 25th, Palms Out will release the first in a series of compilations on cassette and digital. Titled plainly: "End Broken Windows", 100% of the proceeds of the series will go to charity in an effort to raise awareness about broken windows policing methods. Specifically, I hope this project contributes in some small way to spreading the word about the ways in which policing and prosecuting low-level offenses serves only as a way of terrorizing and traumatizing vulnerable populations, without achieving the intended goal of preventing violent crime. The theoretical premise of broken windows policing is fundamentally flawed, and woefully misguided -- there is no evidence that focusing police power on low level violations like sex work, loitering, minor vandalism, petit theft, minor drug offenses, etc. leads to any reduction in violent crime. The practice must end.

Each volume of the series will benefit a different charity doing work to counteract the effects of broken windows policing; all it really does is criminalize being black, trans, queer, young, unhoused, etc. The first volume will benefit the SBB National Sex Worker Bail Fund (swopbehindbars.org/donate). Sex workers are often intersectionally and inordinately affected by broken windows policing, and should never be forced to spend a single night in jail merely for exercising agency over their own bodies.

Musically and conceptually, this record is inspired by a place where broken windows policing is disproportionately felt: the subway/metro. I gave all of the artists the vague prompt to write music inspired by the NYC subway system -- and the results were expectedly varying. For this volume, I pursued artists who have been generally exploring midtempo dance music without focus on 4 to the floor drum patterns. The result was a collection of largely breakbeat-oriented songs, some with direct classic NYC & Detroit electro references, others with more melodic and euphoric UK hardcore inspiration, and others still that kind of split the difference between modern bass and Baltimore club (for lack of better descriptors).

Hardcore and breakbeat were one of the first distinctly UK music styles to come out of the UK rave scene, and they helped to elevate much of rave culture’s most identifying features, from the costumes to the CG-heavy flyers. Born out of the early ’90s when artists like SL2, Altern-8 & Top Buzz were pushing breakbeat into harder-edged territories and despite its central role in birthing the culture, it still doesn’t receive much respect in the dance music community. Why is that, it’s hard to tell, but our parents hated it, that’s for sure. 

A true child of 90’s breakbeat, Meri (from the legendary Rulers Of The Deep duo) has been crafting his skill since the first wave of acid and breakbeat landed in Europe. Getting his first decks from a local gangster (who was later found dead) in his native Estonia during the Soviet times was not an easy task so that tells already a lot about his passion. When talking about Meri’s music or style, although Meri is mostly known as a house music artist due to his ROTD connection, that’s not the whole picture. His roots are closely tied with techno and breakbeat, more often you can hear him play techno now as Meri. 

For us the the ultimate message of hardcore and breakbeat is fun. Some musics are made to get a political message across. Some musics are great at putting a whole futuristic ‘we’re moving music forward’ message across. Some musics are the deepest thing on the planet. But breakbeat and classic hardcore and electro, that’s just made for dancing and we respect the approach Meri has towards his music; grimey, yet fun and danceable.

Look closely at a 2003 documentary on Dillinjah's Valve Sound System and you can catch a babyfaced soundcloud.com/lmajor brocking out in a whirl of ginger dreadlocks. 

The locks are long gone, but the love of a twisted out bassline has driven an addiction to production that has seen him move from drum and bass (as part of a successful threesome) to his current defining solo output. Mixing d&b breakbeat science and bass mechanics with the hardcore and garage of his Essex upbringing, he's leading the next generation pushing theses palettes into new tempos and forms. 

As one half of soundcloud.com/wearelocalgroup he's also a resident DJ at UK festival Field Maneuvers, in 2017 supporting a roll-call of original rave heroes including Mark Archer, Storm and Groove Chronicles.
