Doesn't Agamben make more sense if we read his political turn through the politics of early 90s Italy. The demise of the communist party, the ascent of Berlusconi, and the creation of the Eurozone. I mean, Homo Sacer itself is kind of bracketed by this and the Eurozone crisis. The Kingdom and the Glory is really important in this respect. Locating the determination of biological life all the way back in a theological rendering of history as divine providence, and then seeing that secularised in the european project which prioritises economic unity over new forms of sovereignty. I wonder if in a way his error here is to universalise his diagnosis of the peculiar situation of Europe. Sovereignty still wields economic power in states like the US, which can create their own money, whereas Italy is totally subject to EU discipline. Its history is determined, and so a contradiction between capital and sovereignty is harder to see...

Would you say that Foucault's support of the Islamist revolution in Iran was also a refutation of his theory of power? In a way I see the same failure of dualism applying there as he describes the "luminous and distant point" Khomeini's government might advance to once freed from the Shah's oppressive regime, too cozy with the West, when it was patently clear many Iranians (especially leftists) would end up in prison or dead. Wouldn't a more dialectical approach have been more reserved and prudent about the possibility for emancipation through the kind of revolution at hand in Iran?

It seems to me that the central problem with power is the relationship between its stasis and its productivity. If power basically endures why are different forms of power/knowledge necessary for its reproduction? For me the only convincing answer is enjoyment which is to say the very excess of superfluous forms bespeaks power's inconsistency. The end of Clockwork Orange seems to affirm power until we realize the whole thing is just a circuitious/superfluous route to acheive Alex's sickness which is just another form of exactly the same transgression. Nothing really changes but the forms do which means the whole edifice is in contradiction since there is always a suprerfluous addition of something which counts as no change.

Wilkerson is also a retired US Army Colonel and currently Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Government and Public Policy at the College of William & Mary. We continue our discussion of Hilary Allen’s paper on DeFi and shadow banking and dive into her comparative analysis between Wall Street and Silicon Valley. We see how there are direct analogues between the kind of financial innovations and systemic fragilities that led to the 2008 crash and the crisis dynamics of DeFi: overleveraging and crypto tokens; rigidity and smart contracts; bank runs and stablecoins. Allen then argues that the best approach is not to legitimize DeFi through regulation, but to erect a firewall that prevents it from integrating with the mainstream economy and financial sector.
