At about 50cm long, Glossy Black Cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus lathami) are the smallest of the five black-cockatoo species, but have one of the most formidable beaks of any bird. Click, crack, crack, the male Glossy Black in front of me carefully rotated an Allocasuarina cone with his foot, the massive bill delicately clipping each seed and extracting the tiny kernel. Occasionally, he would made a soft creaky call which was strangely beautiful amongst the constant crackles of the group. 

Much more confiding than many other wild cockatoo species, these gentle Glossy Blacks didn't seem bothered by my presence and it was a wonderful experience to sit amongst these birds and record the sound of their feeding.

This track contains some superb examples of mimicry including the imitation of Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo, Green Catbird, Satin Bowerbird, Grey Butcherbird and numerous other bird species. In fact, in this excerpt alone at least 10 species are mimicked.

This album was recorded in Northern Tuli Game Reserve in Botswana and features the sounds of some iconic species often heard at night in Africa's savannas and woodlands, including lion, leopard, elephant, Spotted Hyena and Black-backed Jackal, as well as nocturnal birds such as Pearl-spotted Owlet & African Scops Owl.

The sound recorded was for a project around the flamingos of the Yucatan. I arrived at this location to record surround sound of an estuary that was located inland. There was a tower about 50 ft. high that I climbed to record the sounds of the birds as they were waking up for the day. I was in the tower by 4:30am and recorded for the next five hours. This is as the sun was just coming up and the birds were calling out in waves of strange noises. Some of which did not sound like birds and the guide that was with me could not name. It was quite the experience. I was in the Yucatan for a period of two weeks and during that time was able to record in many different areas and of course I spent a lot of time with the flamingos. I recorded using a Sound Devices 664 mixer/recorder and at times used a Sound Devices 663. Most of the recordings were done using a Schoeps Stereo set up and a surround sound Holophone.
