Feiertag Selects Spring '22

I enjoyed playing this set on a clean AF Danley soundsystem at the Tar Pits stage of the Something Else festival, as people trickled onto the mud beach and launched themselves on floaties around the lake while the afternoon heat began to necessitate a swim. This includes a field recording I made the night before: listen for insects, frogs, fish splashing, deer prancing, and coyotes howling.

For my 10 year Soundcloud anniversary I decided to revisit the very first mix I posted, both as an exercise in craft and well, I just wanted to do these tracks justice. The original mix represents the first output after a long transition from vinyl to digital DJing. What resulted is adorable, but it's not exactly the mix I had in my head at the time, nor now. Let's put the past decade of learnings to use!

What's changed?

- The gear. Original mix was recorded on Traktor 2 with a VCI-100, updated mix is on a Pioneer setup.
- The transitions. I kept the original spirit of the mixes as much as possible, many mix points are the same, others are not. Generally speaking, transitions are a lot longer, smoother, and any phrasing issues were "corrected". EQ blends are of course completely different, who knows what I did back then.
- That's about it. Tracklist is identical and I tried to recreate the setup I had at the time by disabling key lock/master tempo and not using any FX (ok ok there may be a teensy echo on the last 20 secs).

What was the experience like?

- Humbling. I thought highly of my skills back in 2012, but there are many things that I would call mistakes today that I would never keep in a studio mix.
- Hard work. In order to backwards engineer the mix points, I had to listen to the original over and over again (did I mention humbling?) and recreate everything in Rekordbox. I for sure used loop functionality in the original mix so this was tricky at times.
- Surprising. I didn't let tracks breathe nearly as much as I do now. Back then, I mixed hard and fast. This had the effect of making my mixes more exciting and creative, despite not sounding as smooth. I miss that raw energy and obvious sound of two tracks in the mix together.
- Nostalgic. I didn't anticipate how much it would make me reflect on my life in 2012. Hearing those tracks over and over and performing the mix many times again, it was almost like traveling back in time.

I wouldn't normally recommend going back to recreate old mixes, but given the right context and the right tracks, I can now see what a rewarding experience it can be. In the day to day, progression can be difficult to see -- sometimes you need a healthy dive into your past work to understand how far you've come.

The 2022 version is definitely the same mix...but it's also very different. I'm very happy with the result, this is the mix I intended to make. Enjoy!

Since releasing his debut album Illuminate in the summer of 2014, Buckinghamshire-born and Brighton-based producer Alex Banks has progressed from being an in-demand remixer and Solid Steel ‘Mix of the Year’-winning DJ to that and so much more today. From touring Europe with Moderat to DJing in Tokyo for Red Bull Music Academy’s EMAF, via countless live performances at continental festivals including Germany’s legendary Melt, he’s raised his own bar, his own way. And what comes now and next is just as forward thinking as the material he’s put out previously, unbounded by electronic music’s typically rigid genre barriers and capable of connecting with an audience on a cerebral as well as a physical level.

A key word is emotion: Alex’s music has it to spare. That was evident back when his remix of Bonobo’s ‘The Keeper’ crept out in early 2012, slow-rising to public recognition as the outstanding reworking of material featured on Simon Green’s acclaimed Black Sands LP. With the best part of two million plays across SoundCloud and YouTube alone, attracting SoundCloud user comments like “a true masterpiece”, the track’s popularity, beside fine receptions for further remixes for the likes of Andreya Triana and Husky Rescue, formed a fine foundation from which Alex could further develop his own original material, forever retaining a grip on his audience’s hearts as he moves their bodies.

It’s a good time for Alex Banks, the one-time metal fan whose life changed with his first teenage rave – to be him, to hear him, to work beside him. Whether remixing, collaborating or operating alone, his unique mark is consistently evident in music bearing the Alex Banks brand, rapidly becoming a seal of warm approval in stark contrast to so much sterile dance fare made with machine-like precision. Just as Illuminate made you move inside and out, so Alex’s next chapter is sure to be full of heart-swelling builds and a very organic sense of euphoria. You can go ahead and mark it as essential, already.

I first came across Max Cooper around the time of his last album, One Hundred Billion Sparks. The lead single, Hope, defies simple categorisation, at once ethereal and ecclesiastical, and yet with the throbbing subs and high-end sizzle of a track designed for the dance-floor.  The dance-floor never gets its drop, but instead ‘Hope’ unravels into a meditation on beauty, where minutes pass in a few quick breaths.

When experienced with its  accompanying video, ‘Hope’ acts a useful introduction to Max as an artist. He’s curious, always incorporating new ideas and concepts, whether they come from science or  personal experience. He’s a collaborator, working with visual artists, not as a PR afterthought, but as a central pillar from which his work extends. And he’s not afraid, remaining true to his own path, regardless of how lonely that journey might be.  

Even if his music were trash I’d respect the guy’s approach to creativity, but thankfully Max’s music flourishes in the fertile environment he’s cultivated.  I headed to his studio in Honor Oak Park to hear more about his musical journey, from growing up in Northern Ireland, to Nottingham and on to London. From academic to music producer, the rigor and curiosity remains a constant.
