This storm induced nocturnal chorus was recorded near midnight at Deal Island WMA, Somerset County, Maryland. There are Green Treefrogs and Southern Leopard Frogs calling in the foreground. Additionally, there are several species of singing insects; Greater Anglewing, Slightly Musical Conehead Katydid, Black-legged Meadow Katydid, Saltmarsh Meadow Katydid and several species of tree crickets. There was a lot of vehicular traffic that threatened to ruin the recording session. It finally settled down around 11:30 PM, thankfully.

Common Nighthawk "peenting" and "wing booms" 3:58am on top of Schoodic Head (Schoodic Div., Acadia National Park). Edited, leveled and due to gusting winds and ocean noise, did high pass filter at 250hz. 

Recorded with Fostex FR2 and Sennheiser ME62 (would have used a different mic if I had known he would be here! Came for dawn chorus so only had the omni mic.)

Common Nighthawk at Schoodic Head

This is a distressed female Ruffed Grouse calling. I was not the primary cause of her stress but did take time to record it which I'm sure did nothing to soothe the poor gal. A pair of hikers had just passed me as I was recording on the Alder Trail (Schoodic Division, Acadia National Park). As I watched them walk down the trail, I could see a Ruffed Grouse just ahead of them. It seems they were as startled as she. I doubt she was aggressive (females typical feign a broken wing and move to distract "predators" away from their nesting site or chicks. Nonetheless, the man yelled for the grouse to "Get out of here!" and added an air-kick and flailing hands to emphasize his meaning. (I suspect the 2 hikers were scared and did not know how to interpret the grouse's behavior.)  

I felt a bit like an insensitive journalist asking the grouse how she felt about the violent gesture thrown her way, and so I eventually let her be. Though I had not moved an inch toward her since capturing her distress for posterity, she was still upset. 

Clear skies (though bad air quality day) and about 75 degrees at 8:38am.
