I was thinking of the phrase "Isn't it pretty to think so?" the famous last line from Ernest Hemingway's novel "The Sun Also Rises". It's a bittersweet expression of longing and acceptance, often used to acknowledge a beautiful but ultimately unattainable idea or hope. "Pretty" didn't really work for the song but that was the sentiment behind the lyrics.
