techno so wie sein muß

Kicking off with direct, subtle and in-tune basement dust, Skudge has managed to capture two weekend modes.

This is a soundtrack for either those apprehensive moments, where things start to fall into place and the crowd is rest assured that this will be a time to remember.

But Soundworks is also the soundtrack for those areas that turn party-goers into altered silhouettes, captured between strobe light flashes. Those types of situations, where the smoke and sweat meet in between the last dances.

From start to finish, the fourth album carries a sound that is coherent. What Soundworks means, is that all of the nine tracks on the LP are multi-dimensional, without losing traction. There are adrenal spikes but there are also drifters - most significant in the tracks ’Floating’, ’Scape’ and ’Likemind’.

All-in-all, what we have here is a return to form for Skudge, with a capital S.

Now on to the third release, Dutch duo Will & Ink have turned plenty of heads with their raw and pounding sounds. This latest EP, Mersenne, is no different and features four more tracks of hardware made house.

Opener 'First Mersenne' is a hunched over techno kicker with loud in the mix hi hats leaving icy trails in their wake as chunky beats race below. It's a powerful groove that sweeps all in its way aside. 'Second Mersenne' is similarly defiant in its mission to get from a to b and has some kin ship with the bulky loops of analogue technoists Skudge. 

On to the flip side, 'Third Mersenne' is spikey and splintered, with wooden drums and rattling dub chords that work toward a heady and intense peak. Indecipherable vocal yelps hide within the arrangement and add an extra sense of urgency. Finally, 'Mersellanious' is a beat less sketch of pulsing synths and alien sound effects that entombs you in a warm pillow of sound. It's the way each sound is sculpted so expertly that makes these heavyweight tracks so essential.

Argentinian producers Oscean return to Tresor with Chronium Radiance, their longest release so far, in which the duo continue the evolution of their sound, coalescing the elemental ideas explored in their first two releases and yielding sublime results.

This landmark release will no doubt be seen as the point at which Oscean crystalised a trademark sound, balancing complex percussive rhythms with pulsing and cadenced music in which a universe of often oxymoronic ideas can be found, melded together with a deft touch to create a blissful sonic whole.

There is a sense of space and airiness to side A of the record as synth parts drift across the more solid-feeling landscape of the basslines and percussion: 
Opening track ChronoRebel is a propulsive trance induction that brings forth cinematic images of billowing clouds.
This nebulous quality is continued on Neon Harmonies where the highly syncopated drum track weaves through a haze of colourful synths that while lower tempo than the previous track somehow has an energy of a faster piece.

The flip side has a denser, darker quality to it beginning with Blaster Imploder, a deep and funky track that continues the convention-defying theme by being powerful and frenetic whilst also having a soft and exultant sheen. 
This is followed by Echoes of Chaos which closes out the 12" with a dynamic beat and spacious, sweeping synths that feel as though we are passing through the atmosphere heading towards some distant nebula.

Alongside the tracks on the vinyl release, three digital tracks expand on the universe Oscean have built with a truly ecstatic love theme, a retelling of Neon Harmonies that unveils a river of dub, and a low tempo, drifting yet no-less affecting piece acting as the closing titles to our voyage to this Osceanic world.

The impressive Will & Ink label hits release number four with a new EP from label debutant Yaleesa Hall. This marks an expansion and progression for the label, as it is the first time Will & Ink themselves have not been behind a release, a path they will continue to follow in the future.

The three tracks of the EP are straight up club bangers. 'First Leyland' is well swung, dubbed out and raw bit of concrete funk with whip snapping snare lines and moody atmospheres percolating in the background. 'Second Leyland' has a woodpecker like percussive hook running right through the middle of bulky kick drums. Fizzing textures and sandy surfaces add layers of intrigue and help pull you right into he heart of the track before closer 'Third Leyland' toys with broken, stuttering beat patterns, itchy hi hats and rippling dub techno chords. Raw and inventive, stripped back but full of feeling, these are compelling techno tracks that sound like little else out there right now.

PREMIERE: Andrea Riffo - Veil [RP021]

Field Records label embarks on a new mini trilogy of EPs that will present a magical journey through modern-day trance. First up in the series is Artefakt with their three track effort The Final Theory. Dutch producers Robin Koek and Nick Lapien make up Artefakt, and between them they excel at moody voodoo music on labels like Delsin and Field. 

They open this latest EP with the title track, a deep, spacious house roller with subtle pads and gentle acid that perform slow motion acrobatics for nearly ten minutes. It is suspensory, dreamy music that works on the head as well as the heel. Moving Horizon is then less doleful and introspective but just as deep, with sweeping pads add a sense of scale, busy drums bring the dynamism and icy percussive sounds adding a sense of urgency. Last but not least, Solaris is a fatter, more physical groove with claps and gloopy bass, acid flashes and trancey pads all fleshing out a lush and deep electro workout. This is heavenly stuff that cannot fail to get inside your head and heart.
